On my way into work on my bike, I keep seeing this nice late model GM pickup.  It's a nice green-blue colour, but that's not what draws my eyes, it's the proportions of the truck.  It's a regular cab + long (regular I guess) box model...increasingly rare these days.

To my eyes its proportions are perfect.  I find the proportions of all those other (and more popular) combinations awkward.  Crew cab + short box; king cab + regular box; regular cab + short box; stepside etc, etc., etc.

I remember reading once in the Da Vinci Code books about Da Vinci's "Rule of Thirds".  Sometimes it's called the "Golden Ratio".  It's an over-arching rule of proportions and specifically what relative proportions are most attractive to the human eye.  Photographers, landscape artists and others have used it for years.  In many cases its intuitive and what differentiates some artists from others.

Anyway, just musing.  It would be an interesting poll to see what proportions people find pleasing in their trucks and whether any cars come to mind which embody this principle.

When I owned trucks aesthetics were the last thing on my mind.

Single and married with no children: regular cab regular box. Needed a mans box :) for my slide in camper, sleds, and ATV. nice to access the hitch with the tail gate closed for boat trailer.

Married with Children: Super Cab Regular box and short box: see above but needed back seat for baby. Switched to short box due to large turning radius in bush.

If i had buy a truck again because of toys and bush related activities I would get a full size Yukon or Expedition and pull trailers.

I've always thought an 8' box on a regular cab looked too long and awkward.

A crew cab with an 8' box is the most aesthetically pleasing, IMO, although a regular cab with a 6' box is a close second.

Maybe it's a 6' box.  It doesn't look too long proportionately. What length is "regular" for a regular cab?

Yes, it looks like GM's current short box is 5'8", the standard box is 6'6", and the long box is 8'.

Of all the combinations, the only one I think looks really bad is the short box on the crew cab.

And it's funny you should ask this now. I just spent the last two weeks driving a diesel, crew-cab F250 with an 8' box. I never loaded it down with anything more than a couple of duffle bags, so never got to test out its utility, but every time I walked up to it in the parking lot, I couldn't help but think to myself "man, that's one perfectly proportioned truck."  :)

I find my s/crew with the 6'6" box perfect.  The others look too short.  Any longer and I'd need a tug boat to turn it around.

Funny - I have the same wheelbase and I think it looks too long.  The length of the Supercrew small box looks better to me, though then the box is impractically small (at least for me).
