My Canada Day purchase - 1968 Ford Falcon
« on: July 04, 2011, 07:14:45 pm »

Well I went ahead and bought another old car. It was spur of the moment. It is a 1968 Ford Falcon that ran and drove. Needless to say it needs some work. The interior is minimal and sourced from a Ford Tempo of all things but did seem to run decently. Brakes might need a touch of work. Should be just the thing to drive around with the kids for the summer. They certainly can’t wreak anything in it.

It has a 100hp 170cid (2.8L) inline six engine hooked to a Cruise-O-Matic three speed automatic gearbox. The third generation Falcon was based on the Ford Fairlane. There are are minor trim and interior differences between the 1966-1970 Falcons. The tail lights changed to square ones with the later cars and the grills are slightly different between years.

The engine was very dusty when I got it.

but a quick clean did wonders.

According to what I have found there where 29,166 four door Falcon sedans produced in 1968 (less than the two doors). Base price in the US was $2301 although I haven’t found a Canadian price as of yet. Weight is listed as 2714lbs. Length of 184.5″, width of 73.5″ and wheelbase of 111.0″.

The weakest part is the interior. The dash pad is in the back seat. Seats are from a Ford Tempo so I can probably find a better quality driver’s seat.

I have some ideas for the dash pad which is horrible

Trunk almost looks like it was never used

On the way home. I had my two older boys with me. The wife was behind in our minivan but it made it the 30 minutes home with no issues.

Congrats on the purchase, looks like a great little project car.  Certainly can't go wrong at that price!!

Fascinating. The engine bay and trunk look pristine, yet the interior looks as though WWIII was waged in it.

Those will run forever, sort of like an early Toyota.

I *suspect* it sat in a barn for a few years where mice ate though the interior which was then tossed in favour of whatever the heck they had sitting around (Tempo in this case). Apparently the original dash pad was lost by the shop refinishing it. I'm surprised the previous guy found a (very poor) replacement as these later Falcons where not big sellers.

^ I would guess you are right about the mice.

Looking at that motor reminds me of just how marvelously simple things were back then.  Note the fuel filter.  :rofl2:

I grew up with inline 6's in our International trucks on the farm, and the engine compartment was always nicely empty like that. Nothing like changing spark plugs on an early inline.

Oh we cursed when we started getting V8's!

43 year old car and looks like hardly any visible rust from those pictures. Nice find.

Great find yet again.  When I come out to Calgary next week, it's too bad I am driving west to Vancouver or else I would stop by to see this collection you are forming.  :)

Nice!  Engine bay reminds me of my first car - 79 Merc Zephyr that had the 200 cid straight 6 that i assume is related to the 170 in yours...was a wheezy unit but indestructible - had about 250,000 km's when it went to the scrapper - not because of the engine.. it was still solid.

What's the mileage on the Falcon?

Genuine miles as well  none of these wimpy kilometres.

Cool car!

I love how a lot of the older cars just took the filler pipe and routed directly in the trunk with no care about anything -- so simple.  Now it would be nitpicked to death.
