Interesting   26 litres for 17000 kms    to make it easy that is a bit under   2 ml per km so you certainly don't need to thaw much for a regular commuting type trip.   Careful positioning of the tank near the exhaust plus a heater just to thaw the pipes for a few minutes ought to do it I think

I have a friend who got an '11 Bluetec last December.  He has said how it's been trouble free so far so I guess whatever system they have come up with works, at least for our East coast winters.

Urea or AdBlue is mandatory on all EPA US10 on highway heavy duty diesel engines now. Freezing have not been an issue. MB used to charge an arm and a leg for the stuff. Price must have gone down by now.

I have to run down to Nova Scotia and back tomorrow (about 900kms) It should be interesting to see what kind of mileage I get. So far, around town, I'm getting 11.8 over the first 250 kms with an average speed showing of 37 kph.

I could get to like this diesel stuff!  ;D

Dont know how I missed this one. Congrats on the new purchase. Should be a heck of a fine machine. Glad you are out from under that other nightmare.

Trip Report

I drove down to NS and back today (about 950 kms). It's the first decent highway run for the ML. It was raining fairly heavily at times this AM so I drove the first 250 kms or so without the cruise on at speeds of 110-120. It cleared later and the rest of the trip was with the cruise at 125-130. Trip computer showed 9.3l/100km or 25.26 MPG US (about 29 imperial) Not bad for a nearly 5,000 lb SUV at those speeds. 850 kms before the first fuel stop..... I'm really beginning to like this diesel idea. The SRX would have been burning 13.5 or so at those speeds

As for the ML....it's a real plesure on the highway. It might not be as sporty as the X5 or the Touareg but it's a rock solid high speed highway cruiser and the MB seats made the 8+ hours tolerable.

Neat!!  You need to keep track of the mileage at Fuelly.  I see only 2 other MLs with a diesel there...
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

My last vehicle was a 2008 ML 320 CDi and I loved it.  The diesel is fantastic, tons of low end power, incredible economy for a big heavy vehicle and really a great sense of overall quality.  I never had a single problem with it.  Amazing for towing, my 5,000 lb boat and trailer was easy to pull and safely under the 7,200 limit.

The Artico seats are fine.  That stuff showed zero signs of wear after a couple of years and those seats were are so comfortable.

The only reason I got rid of it was my commute dropped to 25 km round trip per day and we had a paid for 2010 minivan in the driveway.  I miss it though.  Don't miss the lease payment or expensive routine maintenance either!

Enjoy!

How much for the pricey maintenance? Oil changes on diesels can be $$$.

The last one was around $1000 and was just routine maintenace.   :o

It included a replacement of the diesel filter, oil change, and generally just inspecting the car.  I was pretty pissed off about it.  The BMW I drove prior didn't cost me a single penny in maintenance or repair over the 39 month lease and to be honest it would send me back to BMW if I was shopping between the two brands.

Pricey diesel servicing really eats up the fuel savings...

Have to wonder if servicing a gas Benz is significantly less expensive, or if that's simply the cost of entry for Mercedes-Benz 'pampering'?

Good point. The diesel specific oils arn't cheap though. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Benz/BMW dealer charging over $15/L.
