Just The Facts - 205/55R16 H
« on: June 22, 2011, 11:27:28 pm »
Looking for suggestions for H-rated 205/55R16 summer tires.  Priorities are wet grip, noise and wear.  Mostly highway driving, no track time.  When the daytime temp stops at +7C, I switch to my winter tires.  Looking for at least 3 suggestions so when I go to my local dealer, he'll have at least 1 of them.  OEMs were 195/65R15 89S, but I'm looking for something with stiffer handling (hence the plus-1).

Thanks!

 General Exclaim UHP

Some call it all season some list as summer only. A few on the bolard including me have had it and wet traction is very good. Maybe due to the tread pattern. V rated at Crappy tire for about 117 a tire. I was quite pleased with them on my maxima and they are easy to find.

You amateurs  :) need to move on.   When Hankook and Kumo, et al, showed up on the market I heard the same crap.

Whatda got on your vehicles now?    H rated, maybe V rated   :rofl2:

Looking for 18s in a W rated tire summer, but still desire some beer money, Rotalla 107 is currently the go to tire.  Nexen 3000s ZR rated were a sweet deal, but have been withdrawn from the Canadian distribution.

You run that crap on your car, Steve. Sure as hell ain't betting my life on something unknown and untested, when there are a ton of great tires out there at reasonable prices.

Just cause it's from Asia, doesn't mean it's good.

Half the sh*t in your 300 comes from "ASIA" be it west/south/east.

when there are a ton of great tires out there at reasonable prices.

"reasonable prices"  is a very nebulous term in the car business.  I look at the speed rating.  I don't care who makes the tire.  As long as it's DOT and has a speed rating of ZR or W I'm good.  Now we could talk about the pure crap that is installed in NA assembly plants such as Michelin MXZs:  pure garbage. 25K km and a wet tire rating of ZERO.

It's about 3/4 North American.  It would be Interesting to know where the rest comes from.

Your priorities and mine are vastly different. You look for the cheapest tire you can put on a vehicle to move it out the door. I look for the best tire I can get for my money. You want cheap. I want good. That's why there is both McDonalds and Ruth's Chris.

Just spent some days in discussion about the European electric metering scene. Water and gas too actually. Interesting how the EEC had to tighten up metering testing regs because of the crap that was coming out of China. Would test fine new, then start getting inaccurate at the couple of hundred hour mark. This for a device that needs to be sealed and guaranteed accurate for 6 to 10 years. Thankfully, no Chinese meters are for available in Canada, as none have actually passed the measurement Canada inspections.

Why the big deal about metering? To be able to accurately measure something is one of the cornerstones of our economy. To get something so vital so incredibly wrong is quite shocking. Not an issue in Japan or Korea. Not all Asia is the same.

Well as long as it has a W rating like this tire tested by C/D..which finished DFL by a huge margin  ;D

I have Hancook EVO 12s on my GTI. They cost 125 each for 225 45 17. So I have no issue with buying Non NA brands or "inexpensive" tires. But that doesn't mean that any untested brand is good or a good value.

This Ling Long proves that a complete tire design involves more than just a tread pattern, because the L688’s V-shaped layout is essentially a copy of Yokohama’s AVS Sport tire.

Consistently finishing last in all of the performance categories, the Ling Longs’ dry autocross performance was so far behind the other tires’ that we had to round its score up to zero to keep it from being negative. Geswein used the words “hard” and “skatey” to describe the Ling Longs’ feel. Their best showing was on the skidpad, where an 0.88-g effort tied the Yokohamas’ for last.

Things got worse in the wet, where slip-and-slide behavior required a conservative effort to stay between the cones. The Ling Longs were a full five seconds off the autocross pace and needed 22 more feet—1.5 3-series car-lengths—to stop from 50 mph than did the best Hankooks.

On the street loop, we were irritated by a low-speed drone, and these were the only tires to squeal under semi-aggressive cornering.

Aside from tires, the parent company, Shandong Ling Long, in Zhaoyuan, China, also specializes in cement. Is this a strategic advantage? We’re not sure, but the Ling Longs showed the least wear after testing—we nicknamed them the “Live Longs”—so there may be a connection. But even though they cost half the price of many competing tires, they scored less than half the points of even the eighth-place tire. To us, that doesn’t qualify as a value, even at $57

Oh, come on, man. That test was nothing more than an Obama Motors conspiracy to discredit the Chinese tire industry. CIA or FBI agents must have secreted a pair of inferior quality American tires into that test, replacing them FAR superior Chinese tires. Cause, as we all know, everything from Asia is better!

Why not look up the latest auto issue of Consumerreports and make an educated choice based on the various tests they run and then publish detailed results? 12 bucks and you have years of happy motoring  :)

Actually, I prefer Barberians for my steak, nothing like the old fashioned steak house atmosphere. But I figured more people would know of Ruth's Chris. And of course, everyone knows your fav, McDonalds. :)

And thanks for the warning. I will make sure I never drive in front of you when you have those cheap ass Chinese tires on your car. Don't want you travelling right through me in an emergency stop.
