Removing overspray?
« on: June 21, 2011, 09:05:48 am »
Hey there,

I recently did a bit of my own paintwork on my Protege5 (will post pics in another thread soon!) but there is some overspray areas where there is a thin coat of rough paint. My question is, is there any type of wax or polish product and/or pad/glove/sponge I can buy to remove this and get the whole coat of paint to look even and glossy? I don't have an orbital polisher, nor do I want to spend the money to buy one. Detail shops charge around $200 for an exterior detail service, so I'm hoping there is something available over the counter that I can apply by hand and still get a decent result. I'm not looking for a show-car finish, I just want the paint to be even, protected and glossy.

Thanks!

Any solvent-based cleaner (such as Suresolv) will also do the trick.

Cool, clay bar sounds good although I have never used one. After you clay the car, that just cleans it right? I still have to apply a wax? Now would I want to find a wax or a polish after finishing the clay?

Thanks again.

If you go the clay route, you will need to get a lubricant as well.  If you pick up a clay bar kit from Canadian Tire it will come with both the clay bar and the lubricant.  Wash/dry your car and then clar bar all of the panels that have the over spray on them.  Once you have finished clay barring, you will want to apply a wax or a sealant to protect your paint from the elements.  If you decide to polish, this is done after you clay bar and before you wax or seal.  Any other questions just let me know.

Awesome, thanks for the tips - much appreciated. If the weather is nice this weekend, I think I'll clay/wax!
