Our Subaru is a PITA as well. Believe it or not I found  some weird spring loaded thing at Princess Auto that you put a 3/8" drive extension into to turn.  It works well for the job.

I think I bought the same one.  I got one so I don't have to remove a small piece of bodywork to get at the oil filter on my Versys.  Works well!

Well stoped by on the way home last night and all they had (Newmarket) were the belt type and the round metal sleeve type.So anyone know where mechanics get their tools from?

Princess Auto stocks over a dozen oil filter wrenches. If the local store doesn't have your preferred item they may bring it in from the warehouse or you can order it direct over the Internet.

They're very gracious about returns. You won't be stuck with it if it's unsuitable.

You could always phone Mac or Snap-on, they will come right to your house.

This is the one I bought...

Me too.
I had just wrecked a strap type on the Subaru filter and this one came recommended by a guy who crews for a Targa NFLD team, he said they work great on 944 filters as well.

I almost bought one of those, but wasn't really sure if they'd work or not. Good to know. Maybe I'll stop by and pick one up.
I do have a couple of Channelock filter wrenches that work well, expecially on stubborn filters.

The bulk are bought from Snap-on or Mac. Don't knock Canadian Tire tool. Their Professional Series wrenches and sockets are on par with Snap-on and Mac for a fraction of the price. Sears Craftsman tools sold in Canada are garbage. I think they have good tools in the US, though. For a filter wrench, P.A. has a good selection. The best I find are the ones with 3 fingers. You use with a ratchet and the fingers[claws] get tighter as you loosen the filter.

Pretty much any "professional" series tools from any big box store (CDN Tire, Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears) will work.  And most of them have lifetime replacement warranty.  And I disagree...my Sears tools are top notch.  I've only ever broken one in my whole life of using them.  I brought the socket in, they replaced it on the spot, no questions asked, no forms to fill out, no nothing.

20 years ago fantastic ratchets and fine sockets.

Sears tools used to be "Made In The USA".  Perhaps in the States they still are, but not in Canada.  Not any more.  Sears Canada has gone the same route as almost everyone else:  China.  Not saying the Chinese suppliers can't make a good set, they are not asked too.
