http://www.leftlanenews.com/update-mazda-confirms-end-of-mazda6-production-in-the-u-s.html#Mazda explains that as part of the brand’s efforts to improve production and investment efficiencies, production of its midsize sedan (Mazda6 in the U.S., Atenza in Japan) will change from three plants – Hofu, Japan, Flat Rock, Michigan, and Changchun, Jilin province, China, to a single plant in Hofu. “The decision to relocate to Hofu and consolidate the production of the next CD-car makes the most sense for our business,” said Mr. Yamanouchi, Mazda CEO. The CEO continued, “However, we are committed to working with Ford, our joint venture partner in AAI (Auto Alliance International), to identify potential future opportunities for the plant. Mazda and Ford have enjoyed a close relationship for over 30 years. We have collaborated on projects where there are mutual benefits, and both companies remain committed to continuing this strategic partnership.”It is believed a big reason behind the move was the lack of volume being produced at the plant. Mazda produced only 45,000 of its sedans in 2010 at the location, falling fall short of the necessary amount in order to be profitable at the plant.Although Mazda did not give a firm date for when production would end in Michigan, it is expected that the joint-venture will continue until the end of the current model’s lifespan sometime around 2013.
