Why on earth did they make the new one bigger than the E60, is everyone getting fatter?

Yes.

Although apparently, at least for the next gen. M3, they are trying to make it lighter.

But the physical dimensions of the whole 3 series lineup will increase.

Yes, but they're trying to keep the weight the same.  I didn't explain well.  They're trying to make it lighter to avoid additional weight gain.

The M5 has been my dream car for a long time now but I prefer the past generation MUCH better. The CTS-V is now at the top of my hot rod sedan list.

The E60? Ewww.
Power is how fast you hit the wall... Torque is how far you take the wall with you!

max. torque: 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) at 1,500 – 5,750 rpm.

Torque is 550Nm@1000rpm.

Now that is impressive!
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

New M5 has been getting rave reviews.

e.g. the Chris Harris review: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=591989.  He gives it 5 stars.  I understand he's generally recognized as being an excellent, unbiased reviewer.

The E60? Ewww.

E60 has really grown on me.

The F10 is very much like a modern E39, and while I think the E39 is truly awesome, the F10 is a bit too "new" to shake the corporate-ness aspect as yet. All IMHO of course.
Everything in life is relative.

^ I've seen & heard 2 E60 M5's recently and I've thought, "That car looks much better than I remember...  Hmm.....  looks pretty good!"  I never thought I'd say that with the E60, but she has certainly grown on me too, especially the E60 M5.

Indeed. The E60 has for a while been affordable to us plebes. No longer does it say "I'm an Eggggsecutive, a ha ahaha  heeee hooo *snort*"

Monkey Harris does love his German cars.

I like the E60 M5, it's just that gearbox I don't like. They are very cheap from the US though.

couldn't you eventually get the 6spd in the M5 like you could in the M6?

Assuming the M5 feels like the M6, I find the smaller sporting Bimmers to be more fun to drive.  Sure that V10 at wail sounds awesome, but the car is so accomplished that it's pretty much boring at anything less than extremely super-legal speeds.

Have to agree with GD, although for me many cars fall into the "doesn't make sense in Ontario" category. Including the M3.

Nice photo comparisons.

Wish they would put the "Big Star" grille on the E63.

Oh yeah.  Big Star grille looks much racier, younger.

Should be reserved for the E63 AMG coupe if MB ever makes one.
(but you never know, MB made it for the C63 AMG sedan :P)

You can always get something aftermarket.
