RIP +
« on: June 13, 2011, 11:48:54 am »
Today is a sad, sad day. The riding community has lost a dear friend who brought us so much joy over the years. RIP my dear friend...may you ride far with your angels. May God rest your soul L.M.

I rode with her on a charity ride (Women Riding Out Against Rape) a few hours earlier.

Damn, that's tragic.

What happened?  Or does anyone know yet?

The way I understand it, the bikes were behind Car 1 which swerved into the opposite lane, at which point Car 2 (driving in the opposite lane) made evasive maneuvers to avoid Car 1, lost control and took out several bikes.

Very nasty. Not a lot a person can do. I touch my airbag vest cord like a rosary in heavy traffic.

Indeed not a lot she could've done. Just for the record, she was an instructor at a popular motorcycle training foundation. She was the type of person who would wear full leathers hot, cold, humid, 40 C, day or night. Unfortunately that didn't matter very much in this case.

I am glad to say that the motorcycle enthusiasts community has been very helpful. Her brother in law posted on a popular GTA motorcycle forum looking for people who knew her. My boss knew Liz rather well, so him and I got to speak with her brother in law and her sister. What can I say... it's hard not to shed a tear. A couple of Liz's very close friends are taking care of the funeral arrangements, with help from several riders.

Been a harsh weekend for me, 2 of my buddies went down on Saturday night and were hospitalized with minor injuries, then Sunday night I found out about Liz after riding with her earlier in the day. Please, please ride safe everyone!

I am standing on the seashore. A ship spreads her sails to the evening breeze and starts for the ocean. She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her till at last she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says, "She is gone."
Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. The loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone says, "She is gone." there are others who are watching her coming. Other voices take up the glad shout, "There she comes."

Henry Scott Holland.

Thank you,
V

Rider error...or not their fault?

Yup..me too.  And under my leather I had body armor and a back protector.  I can't believe there are people who don't wear proper riding gear......

Thats terrible .
Do you know if the vehicle in front that they were following blocked their view of the traffic ?
A major pet peeve of mine , I will not follow a vehicle that I can't easily see around or over .

The first 2 were at-fault.

My sincere condolences as well.

Here is the biggest problem with riding, second only to the most useless animal on the planet, the deer.  To stay safe you need to be faster than the traffic flow.  So basically you need to be doing about a buck 20 in a 80 kph posted highway to do that.  In my area we are inundated with OPP that have nothing to do plus are under heavy pressure to bring in revenue for the Counties.  Consequently, guys like me can pick up 3 speeding tickets just driving to Tobermory where there are 3 detachments along the way.

So if you keep the speed down you inevitably find yourself banged up in a traffic "platoon".  Then it's only a matter of "when", not if when you run out of luck particularly if you're driving a cruiser and are OVR 50.  :)

Thank you for the kind words everyone. The funeral is in the morning, we have organized a ride in her memory.

What a shame.  People like that light up the world so much while they're in it that the darkness that results in their passing is all the more profound.  You will miss her, but not forget her.  That is enough and all you can do.  Peace.

Indeed, she'll always be guarding us.

A couple of pictures from the funeral. It is a motorcycle instructor's blog.
