Need advice on buying used truck
« on: June 08, 2011, 01:29:12 am »
I am looking to buy a full size truck for work.  Never owned a truck before, so I am looking for some advice on a good reliable truck to buy.  I have a smaller budget of $10000 so the truck could be up to 10 years old or newer with higher km's.  Just wanted to know peoples experience with different brands.  I am leaning toward F150 with the 5.4 or a GM.  Anybody have some knowledge of GM's 6.0 ltr gas engine?    I've seen a few of those around.
Anyways, thanks for any help you can provide.

On the 5.4 97-03 ejecting sparkplugs can be a problem, on the later trucks they tend to break in the head when you change them. Cam phasers can be a problem on the Tritons as well.

GM, I had one co-workers vehicle had massive oil usage just over 100,000, known problem on some 5.3's, has to do with the breather system. Not too bad a fix if the dealer can find the TSB, hers didn't. The 5.3's also can have a problem with the AFM (active fuel management).

4WD systems in all brands can get expensive if misused, which isn't too hard to do with part time 4WD.

I'd just get the F-150 with the 4.6 engine  Unless you'd be towing a ton....then I'd get the diesel.
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

Utility, construction, and landscaping firms buy 80-percent of pickups. Many are overworked and under maintained. Low mileage is not an accurate predictor of remaining trouble free service life. Numerous drivers may have bashed them around job sites, plowed snow or towed heavy equipment, all driveline killers. Body damage is often repaired privately and may not appear on a history report. A prospective purchase should be assessed by a body repair technician. Tip: the majority of commercial trucks are white.

Part-time four wheel drive (4WD) with low range gearing is for poor traction road conditions only; ice, mud, snow, and loose gravel. Dry pavement use results in damaging driveline binding, wheel hop and costly repairs. Badly treated 4WD vehicles are money pits. Full-time all wheel drive (AWD) vehicles have a center differential that allows the axles to rotate at different speeds eliminating dry pavement issues.

Finding a good used pickup is challenging. Paying a premium for an up-optioned truck used mostly for passenger carrying, personal trips and commuting makes financial sense. Engage an independent off-site mechanic to inspect a purchase before committing, especially if it has 4WD or an automatic transmission.

Perhaps in the GTA. Out west I bet 90% of pickups are personal use..

Thanks for the advice.
The usage is for business.  I install and refinish hardwood floors, so it would be packed with various saws and tools.  As well as floor sanders and a large vacuum.
That sounds like a good idea to stay away from plain white trucks though  ;).

I'd stick with the 4.6  It's proven to be reliable and rather robust.  It's been around for awhile too...

I'm no expert on the Dodge.  I do know the old 318 (5.2L) was a super reliable V8 though....

I do not think I have seen many installers with pickups
you may be better off with a van, a new cap with run you a couple gs
the school boards around here only keep their vans for 2-3 years on a lease
and they are not hard on them

I am still thinking about a van as well.  I know it would probably be more practical.  It seems that they are little cheaper but also carry the same problems, re: hard usage and higher km's.
Honestly the reason why I am hesitant is the same reason people buy SUV's rather than mini-vans.  ;D  I know that's not the best reason but it is what it is.  I haven't ruled out a van yet.  I still have some time make up my mind.

Why not look into a Dodge Sprinter?  Diesel power...but MPG.  And..IMO...a Sprinter looks "professional" for a tradesman...Plus you can put HUGE advertising for your company on the sides of it.....Killing two birds with one stone...

because a Sprinter is overkill in most cases

Does even the low roof Sprinter fit in a normal domestic garage?   Or into many multi-storey/underground car parks that have a height bar at the entrance.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

The OP has 10K, tax in, I assume, to spend.  There are few good options at current gas prices.  Perhaps a private sale GM Safari 4.3 and remove the rear seats.

One thing about a Sprinter, you could set up your chop saw inside if need to get out of the rain & snow
