Good move IMO. Maybe this will allow Mazda to move to global cars production as well. Beside, I'd take a "made in Japan" over "made in USA" car any day.

it will also add 6% duty to the price
Not that I care, I probably would not buy one

It's fine by me. The final price is what it matters and Mazda (and others) managed to still be competitive.

Good for them. Hopefully North Americans respond by not buying a single one.

A bit odd given where USDJPY is. Must be some really nasty inefficiencies at the US plant.

Like North Americans, and especially Canadians, did not buy any Mazda3s (made in Japan). Nobody wants well built cars isn't it?

Not poor, but in my experience, Japan-made cars are better screwed together. In addition, the Mazda6 are made by UAW where the Camrys and Accords aren't.

Probably has everything to do with miserable Mazda6 sales not making a NA plant (even a shared one) worthwhile.

Pretty incredible to see that the Cmary and Accord are out of the top 4 best selling mid-size sedans, who would've thought this 2-3 years ago?

Hah...someone will come along very shortly and tell us that japanese parts shortage is affecting production;) hence the sales.  My take, start making parts here, we need the jobs.

For May specifically, that is the issue.  However, it is not like in June everything will be back to normal.  The shortage will affect the numbers for months to come which will put more and more people into American and Korean cars.

Question is, once production is back to normal (fall probably) will the Japanese numbers rebound?

Notwithstanding the Japanese parts shortages, the "numbers" are dependent on spiffs.  As an example, GM out spiffs all and is also heavy into fleet.  Malibu sales are up, but is it making money.  I think not.  Hence GM stock is 13% below IPO.

In all fairness, the whole market is going down these days.

Irrelevant.  GM stock fell soon after the speculators took a powder last December.  Industry consensus is that GM is still a company with major management issues.

Look a Toyota.  This time last year $68 and today $82. per share.

Most ppl equate sales volume with success.  It's actually profitability that defines success and despite a monster sh*t kicking by Obama Motors and then the storm it's still showing signs of strong sustainability.

North Americans need to get their collective heads out of their collective behinds and realize that without an economy having a significant amount of manufacturing capability we are screwed. One way to do that is to buy cars that are designed and manufactured HERE and not overseas.
