It's official: Chrysler is now a foreign-owned car company
« on: June 03, 2011, 11:22:33 am »
The US taxpayers are still on the hook for $1.3 billion, and Chrysler now joins the imports as a foreign owned company.  Bail the company out, lose money on it, then facilitate the sale to a foreign company.  Fiat made out like bandits...
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

So, they can't use the "Imported from Detroit" line, anymore?  :P

Yesterday, I had a domestic... :)

Nice to have an Italian car. Designed in Detroit, using lots of German pieces....

Cept, that Chrysler will still be designing complete cars in Detroit. No other "import" is doing that, from what I understand.

Soon as I saw the title, I knew it was you, rrocket. You have been gleefully saying this for ages. Almost as gleeful as your pronouncements way back when that Chrysler could never be saved.

Is there such a thing as an American car company?  The Big Three build cars in various parts of the world, ship them to other places, and so on.  The Japanese companies do the same.  And so on.

Personally, I think the benefits of the auto industry, for better or worse, boil down to jobs.  The key for a nation is to have the manufacturing plants.

While manufacturing is important, engineering is key. Having the ability to engineer cars is the crucial piece. Being able to design and build is where success lies.

Totally agree.  I tend to think about manufacturing as a process that includes the concept, the development, the execution.  But, it is not so today.  They can be done in completely different parts of the world.  We need as many of those jobs (skilled...) as possible.  They're all high value.

The big 3 from Japan have incurred sales deficits last month, why?  No parts because of the quake in Japan.  Solution: You sell cars here, more parts need to come form here = more north american jobs.

With multinational corporations it gets farmed out all over in similar ways. GM designs their small cars in Korea, medium cars in Europe/China, pickups in North America. Toyota designs small cars in Japan and France, pickups and vans in North America.

Looks like Fiat Chrysler will design the small stuff in Europe and the big stuff in NA.

They also have found a way to re enter the North American scene with the Fiat line.  Nothing wrong with that.
