Just how fast is a Nissan GT-R?
« on: June 02, 2011, 12:23:40 am »
A friend of mine has a new STi that has been to "the tuning doctor" and the result is 339hp at the wheels.  This car feels VERY fast.  I had a little seat time, and jeez, second or third gear roll-ons in this car are just brutal.  Yeah, there are going to be faster cars, even stock ones, as a crank rating of 400hp (about what this car makes now) is not super exotic, but this thing feels really fast.

He and I are out in the STi this evening and come upon a GT-R driving at the speed limit on a very quiet stretch of highway just outside of town.  My friend is grinning from door to door as he pulls alongside.  We're banging along at 5000rpm in third and he mats it.  The GT-R driver responds, and in no time, is so far out ahead of us, I'd swear we'd stopped.

The GT-R brakes and we come back up beside him.  We're going slower now, near the top of second gear.  This time, it's worse.  The GT-R doesn't walk away.  It runs away.  The Subaru is pulling hard, but I'd swear we'd traded for a Smart car watching the GT-R disappear.  We didn't see him again as my buddy backed off before we found trouble.

The GT-R has risen to the top of my "if I won the lotto" list.  Damn.
No place I'd rather be...

Yup! 0-60 in the 2s and 11.2 in the 1/4 mile (stock) is serious business.  And easily repeatable with the AWD.  The GT-R is one bad a$$ car.

The Alpha 9 GT-Rs are insane......http://www.amsperformance.com/cart/AMS-Nissan-R35-GT-R-Alpha-9-Performance-Upgrade-Package.html

Wonder if it was stock...

There is a guy in town with 850hp, apparently this year he upped it to 1000hp.  I've never lapped with him but know a few people that have.  They say when you wave him by it's like his car is hot out of a cannon as it blows by you.

I wonder, at this rate of acceleration, how does it impact your ability to control the car? Probably not very safe unless you are on a track.

Shot out of a cannon is an apt description.

Yup - probably a nice mid-low 12-second STi vs a low 11-second-high-10second GT-R.

New Supercars are FAST. The days of tuning a WRXs or STis to blow away big dogs are pretty much gone (unless you're REALLY doing something nuts). 12 seconds just isn't fast anymore.......which is crazy.

There was a GTR at the Provincial Autoslalom Championships last weekend.
I beat it by 10 seconds a lap, it's not a great autocrosser.

I disagree, I went through some cones with it, it was pretty impressive.  I have a feeling the driver was the failure... especially on that long track!

Bill gave it a try, he was less than enthused, I don't know what his lap time was though.
I'd love to try one out

But yeah, the GTR driver probably has one season of autocrossing under his belt.

A good friend of mine with a CTS-V tangled with a GTR and is looking to upgrade but can't find anything under $150k that competes. I said "if you can't beat them then the answer is obvious"

Had lunch with my STi chum today.  It's heading back to the shop next week for more mods.  They say there's about another 100hp in there without resorting to drastic action, but it is pretty pricey and will compromise reliability somewhat and he can kiss his powertrain warranty goodbye.  (hasn't yet?  really?)  The engine is strong, but I guess as gross hp gets close to 500, the downstream parts will have a somewhat shorter life.

Another 100hp won't be close to enough to catch that GT-R.  He's dreaming...

Anything beyond a "stage 2" setup on a WRX or STi is gonna cost [big] dollars and compromise reliability.

Agreed, the incremental gains are not worth the risk. You would have to spend $20k to do it right.

My buddy also has a Lingenfelter equipped Z06 but it is caged up. He wants a naughty daily driver.
