Matrix 2010, a nightmare
« on: May 18, 2011, 09:17:34 am »
Bought a Matrix 2010 during the middle of 2009. then the nightmare starts:

During the first month, I had to drive back for noise issues - from door, front, chair..., the service tried at least 3 times changing everything but the noise was still there.

After that, coming fule efficience issue: 10L/100km on the highway. 12+L/100KM local. I drive very conservatively, easy on accel and don't go much over 110-115 on highways.
I had the dealer do some diag. tests. they just did a computer testing and says its good and "within spec". When I asked what wrong with the number for real experience they didn't care. Basically they seem to say everything is great no matter what.

I even don't want to mention the callbacks...

What's the noise?  Is coming from inside the car, or under the hood?  When does it do it?

I've never seen a Matrix get that kind of gas mileage.  My all wheel drive Forester does better than that.  I think I'd try a different dealer for service.

That mileage is worse than my Outback. I had a 2005 Vibe with the 1.8L and 5 speed and got as low as 6.0L/100km. The worst tank I can remember is 8.5L/100km.

The new Matrix weighs 95 lbs more than the out going model so that will affect mpg , the 09 has alot of problems , don't know if they got it sorted by 2010 . The reliability was so off in the 09 my friend decided the 08 Vibe/Matrix was a better choice .

The 09- Matrix with the 1.8L engine has the newer engine that has improved fuel economy over the previous model.  The 2.4L engine is an older engine and fuel economy is not class-leading, but 12.0?  Dragging the brakes?  I do see a surprising number of people driving with their left foot on the brake pedal.  (brake lights on all the time...)
No place I'd rather be...

The 08 matrix 1.8  manual
gets  26 city 33 highway
auto gets 25 city 31 highway

The 2010 matrix 1.8 manual gets
- manual 26 city 32 highway
automatic  25 city 31 highway  U.S. mpg ( more real world numbers imo )

Sounds like a couple of problems with the car and maybe a couple of problems with the dealership. Hard to say exactly but definitely the low fuel economy would be sending some warning lights to me.

The key questions are... which model of Matrix is this exactly? The one with a 1.8L or with the 2.4L? If the 2.4L then is it the one with AWD or FWD? If it's AWD... then with it's 4 speed auto (not the 5 speed like the FWD 2.4L) and winter transitioning into spring road conditions it's not surprising to have some terrible fuel economy in places.

I get about 8.5L/100km average on my Corolla XRS which is the same platform and same engine/transmission configuration as the Matrix versions with the 2.4L FWD. The 2AZ-FE engine is older... it's a good engine but compared to the latest tricks it's not the most fuel efficient and the Matrix is heavier and taller and so it's no small wonder that the fuel economy is both rated worse and gets worse in real life comparisons.

That said... 12L/100km says to me that maybe something is wrong. Need to know more!

As for rattles... yep I've got them too. Pretty typical with the 2009/2010 Corolla/Matrix duo. It's plastic on plastic or plastic and some pieces inside the pillars that cause most of the problems although I had a rear window replaced because it was not fitting properly. My dealership has responded to all of the rattles that I've reported and fixed the majority of them.

More info: Matrix 2010, auto trans, FWD.

I am still fighting with Toyota service: collected all gasoline receipts, captured photos of mileage guage... they requested me to pay $120 for the inspection fee -a technician guy drove my car with less 20KM and report 9.3L/100KM, but they said it's "in the spec" and there was head wind outside...

Just wondering is there any third-party department/orgarnization support consumer?

who can provide me information of a claim department from government or other organization?

Call up Jack Layton in Ottawa.

Other than that, you're DONE.  Not getting money from anyone.  Trade it for something else.

Highly recommend a Cruze.

+1000 on the rattles.  Got all the rattles fixed in our Corolla after several visits to the dealership. Dealership hasn't been able to sort out the rattles in the Rav4's centre console and B pillar yet....they've tried installing shims in the console, but still rattles. Technicians can hear the rattle, but are at a loss on how to fix them.  Fuel economy and power in the Rav are great though.
