Tires for RX-8
« on: May 16, 2011, 01:55:56 am »
Need to replace the tires on the 8, had Nitto Invo, lasted 10,000Km, plus a few track days.

Looking for quite, comfy, good wet traction, good tread wear. Performance wise not as important, since there will be a little one on board with me most of the time. Stock tire size is 225/45/R18.

Thanks.

Tirestrends is selling the 245/45/18s at $230, very reasonable.

$150 at Tirerack if you're anywhere close to the border.

Hankook EVO V12

Really like them.  Someone else here just bought a set:

Finished 2nd in a comparo too...

Just out of curiosity, and I want other people's opinions with Hankook, is it just me or their sidewalls in general are real soft.  I purchased a set of H727 All-Season for my mother-in-law and I can totally understand its softness.  I then purchased a set of i*Cept EVO W310 H-Rated Winter Tires for myself, and found them, at least at the beginning pretty soft.  I came off of Blizzak LM-25 which are very sporty and was hopping for an equivalent.  They've become gripper as time went on, but then Spring came and made the transition back to my Toyo T1R for the summer.  Oh, and another thing.  Don't even think about buying tires in Canada.  Anything across the border is cheaper.  Get them shipped from absolutely any tire site, to an installer there, whether you get his name from Tire Rack or just by calling any tire shop, and the way you go.

Unfortunately, I am over 4 hours just to across the border, and still some driving on the US side. Not worth the time and effort in this case for tires.

The Yoko is $10 cheaper on Tiretrends / 1010, very resonable.

^^ Only Michelin tires show up in the search at that website, no Hancook or Yoko.

I have owned the Hankook V12s on my M3 last summer.  They were quiet and nice in the wet but the sidewall is very soft.  At the track (BMW driving schools), turn in was not as good as the PS2 and overall traction was a step down.  However, as a "value" performance tire they were nice.  By the end of the summer I regretted getting them because they were a noticeable step down from the PS2 in my view from a pure performance perspective.

This summer I have the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (the replacement for the PS2) and they are better than the PS2 and a significant step up from the Hankooks in all respects.  They are quiet and comfortable (more so than the PS2), have great turn in and responsiveness, amazing wet capability and the best dry traction of any tire I have owned outside of a dedicated track tire.  If price isn't the issue, this is the tire to get for a performance vehicle especially if you intend to take it to the track occasionally.

P.S.  I also can say that I did like the Hankooks more than the Nitto Invo you are coming from.  The Nittos were my least favourite performance tire of those I have owned.  Here is the ordering of high performance tires I have owned on my various cars in order from least favourite to best...  Nitto Invo, Hankook V12, Bridgestone Potenza RE050 Pole Position, Michelin PS2, Michelin PSS (by a mile).

EDIT... just reread your post and you noted that performance isn't a huge factor for you... in that case, definitely the Hankooks as they are decent performance but quiet and comfortable.

I had RE-01R on my RX-8 when I sold it and they were amazing.  Best tire for dry/wet/track I have ever had.  Real world tire wear was actually better then expected too.

They are now discontinued but have been replaced by RE-11 I believe.

Thanks for the great feedback, guys.

The 8 is a great touring car, the ride and comfort is almost large sedan like. It was also a good car to learn how to drive at the track. I want something else for track purpose in the very near future.
