Cycling events 2011
« on: May 15, 2011, 09:38:16 am »
For any cyclist out there or anybody looking into getting into cycling. Here are some "tours" that look like fun and a great way to spend the day(s) on the weekend.

The only event I have done in the past was the Centurion Collingwood which is an amazing event with a lot of support for those that want it. The second best post ride meal I have ever had (Conquer Cancer was first). I've heard good things about the Norfolk ride from one of the members on this board. The others I hope to find out this year.

If anybody else decides to go, let me know as its always great to meet up with others.

For those in Montreal or nearby, there are several from which to choose, including the well established "Tour de l'Ile":

I rode the Tour de Grand in Cambridge today and will say that this is a great event and recommend it to anybody that wants to get out for a ride along other cyclist.

Did the 100km course which for the most part was great. Loved riding through the town with the roads blocked off and flying through the corners, as close as to feeling like a pro I will ever get.

The only flaw on the course is the once section which you have to go out/back on has a lot of stop signs and a few traffic lights (no police) which throws off your pace but understand they are limited with the roads they can use. The fact that they had as many intersections closed as they did was incredible.

I would guess that there was over 500 people there, maybe even more.

Lunch was good. Bagel or pita sandwich, chips, fruit, water, juice, cookies and the best part was the entry fee was ONLY $20. I don't think you can find a better deal anywhere.

We have added to our calendar for next year.

Anybody going to BC Bike Race this year? It looks like really good fun and definitely something I hope to do in the future (maybe 2012). If anybody on here has any experience of it, I would like to hear your comments.

Thought I would update this since I went and did the Tour de Norfolk.

July 16/17 - Tour de Norfolk
http://www.letourdenorfolk.com/home.php
160/100/75/40 km Saturday
100/75/40 km Sunday

Rode the 160km route on Saturday and then the 100km route on Sunday. I like to call it a DIC (Double International Century) which was my first one so I can finally cross that off my list. My partner rode the 40km route which turned out to be 52km because the guy laying out the arrows on the road missed a turn. This was great for her as she wanted to ride 50kms the first day anyway. Then she did the 40km route on Sunday. She thought both courses were nice and well supported.

The event is well organized and offers a route for pretty much every cyclist. Support stations on the courses with water, powdered gatorade so you can mix it yourself, fruit, energy bars and most important that weekend, a lot of shade!

The roads were pretty much in good condition and had a low volume of cars on it. Only had one car honk at us and not sure if it was a HI or Get off the road honk type of honk. Most of the route are pretty flat but there were a few short climbs on the second half of the 160km course.

Lunch was a Subway sub, chips and more fruit. There was no supper on the Saturday but for Sunday there was a post ride pasta lunch w/salad. Both days had ice cream sandwiches available after your ride.

For both mornings they had muffins, juice and bananas available.

The weather that weekend was hot, sunny and then even hotter. First time I've actually gotten bothered by the heat while out riding and had to soak my head in cold water at one of the rest stops. Still better than riding in rain all day.

I can recommend this event to anybody looking for something to do in a place you would probably drive right past. The people are friendly, same with 99% of the other cyclist. For the money I thought it was very good value. We have added to our list for next year.

London has a Velodrome. I've never been as they built it after I moved away. Thought about going once buy I think you must have a track only bike to use it.

If I still lived there I would probably buy one for winter and use it for some training.

Okanagan area hosted two amazing rides this year: Penticton Granfondo and Kelowna Granfondo. I did the former and it was absolutely fantastic. Axel Merckx and the team did amazing job to organize the event. It was not cheap but the organizers delivered over and above. About 2000 cyclists took part in Axel Merckx Granfondo. Here is what I liked the most:
- people could choose between two distances: 92km or 160km. both courses followed the same route for the first 70km.
- designated lanes for cyclists in towns and on most of the highway
- feeding stations with free food and water
- tech support available at feeding stations and along the way
- cameramen on motorcycles and on the roadside. There, I felt like a pro being filmed along the way  ;D
- people could order images afterwards. i got over 10 preview images of myself, so it was possible pick what i liked.
- great food and mingling after the ride.
I hope to do it next year
