What are some signs that you shocks are wearing out?
« on: May 13, 2011, 08:55:17 pm »
I used to think my car was a fairly smooth ride. Lately it seems you can really feel the bumps and cracks in the road. Perhaps its just me, I've never had to replace shocks on a car before.

When you push down on a corner of your car and let go, what does it do?   Good shocks, it bounces a couple of times and stop.  Bad shocks, it'll go boing boing boing boing boing boing...

Were you ever entertained driving behind a Chrysler mini-van and watching the back suspension pogo repeatedly every time it hits a bump?

Those shocks were long overdue.

Are your shocks leaking at the shaft/seal. That would be an initial sign they are on their way out if not done.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

In your case, take a quick look at your rear shocks, if they're wet at all replace them. My ION has 107K on it and it currently on it's 4th set of rear shocks. The ION/Cobalt/G5/Pursuit came with really poor quality rear shocks. Buy a set of replacement ones with a lifetime warranty, you will need a 21mm box wrench and an 18mm socket to change them.

Struts and shock absorbers support the vehicle and absorb the shock from bumps and road hazards. They consist of shock oil, dampening valves, a piston, seals and a body. When they fail the internal dampening valve or main shaft seal stops working and shock oil leaks out. Worn out struts and shocks, visible with the car on a hoist, will appear oily and wet. Replace them in pairs.

Excessive bouncing or bottoming out suspension over humps and bumps, rattling and shuddering on corners, if it feels like your tires are bouncing across the pavement, they probably are.
