WASHINGTON — Kia is recalling 58,322 2004-'07 Spectras, primarily in Midwestern and northeastern states, because corrosion from road salt could cause the fuel tank to fall off the vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

NHTSA said prolonged exposure to road salt could cause corrosion of the straps that hold the tank.

"As a result of the corrosion, one or both straps may separate, allowing the fuel tank to contact the ground and possibly disrupt the integrity of the tank," the agency said. As a consequence, the agency said, "the fuel tank can fall from the vehicle and strike the ground, which could cause a fuel leak," creating a fire hazard.

Uhhhh, yeah, no kidding... :rofl2:

No surprise really, you get what you pay for. All the more reason why Kiyundai needs to work very hard to overcome their Walmart/built to a price bargain-basement image.

not that its good but this doesn't mean all that much as there is recalls every week, no manufacturer seems to be immune and the price you pay has no bearing on it.

October 27,  2010 – BMW of North America announced a recall Tuesday of more than 150,000 vehicles because of potential problems with their fuel pumps.

April 14,  2011 – Ford Motor Co and U.S. safety regulators have agreed to a greatly expanded recall of the best-selling vehicle in North America, the Ford F-150 pickup truck, the regulators said on Thursday.
The expanded recall is for a possible short-circuit that could cause airbags to deploy unexpectedly, and involves nearly 1.2 million F-150 pickup trucks and 16,000 Lincoln Mark LT vehicles, said the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This is in addition to a previous recall of 144,000 Ford F-150 trucks, bringing the total for this issue to 1.33 million vehicles, NHTSA said.

FEBRUARY 2011 -- Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, and model year 2004-2007 Lexus RX330, RX350, and RX400H vehicles..

April 29,  2011 – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into whether nearly 1 million General Motors vehicles may have faulty gas gauges.

etc, etc, etc, etc

you get what you pay for  ;D

Those other examples are all design problems. This is just a fuel tank strap, been the same design forever. It is just shoddy low-cost materials that are the culprit. Worthy to note that the 2003-05 Sonatas are also suffering an epidemic of rusted-out gas tanks, likely for the same reason. Makes one wonder what else they scrimped on.

GM recalls don't count.  ;D

Hey, at least this time he wasn't dusting off a 6 month old recall and announcing it like it was breaking news.

What they could do in pickups is put the fuel tank in the cab, right behind the seat, that way it can't fall off...wait, that's what they used to do...
