Gotta Love Freshly Detailed Paint!!!!
« on: April 28, 2011, 02:01:37 pm »
I have been spending most of today detailing my own car.  I am far from done, but I just love freshly detailed paint.  It's extremely gratifying work.

So far, I've made one pass with my Flex with a white pad and Menzerna Power Finish.........and then I made a second pass with another white pad and Menzerna 0106FF.  With those two passes done, it really provides a mirror finish!!

After working so many hours on your car do you not get pissed off when it gets a little dirty?

Obviously today is a pay yourself day since you have the time. Is that because the new baby is on board and you can't leave home!  Anyway as TG stated you really can be annoying - not only making us feel guilty but also envious. Plick. ;D

Nah, not really.  A 5 minute wipe down with Poorboys Spray & Wash and it's clean again.  I typically only drive it on dry roads so it usually stays pretty clean anyways.

I work from home full time so I'm home anyways, not just because of the new baby.

Btw, I will try not to be as annoying in the future.  LOL   ;D

Wow, that finish is immaculate! I didn't understand some of the terms of the items you used to get there though. Can you walk a layman through some of the steps/products you use to get that deep gloss?

Cheers,
A.

*** Just looked up Menzerna, cool product. So that part I can figure out - what is the "Flex" you refer to? Do you use some type of powered polisher?

Seeing that paint reminds me....I must give our cars their seasonal trip to the carwash while it is still spring.   ;)

No problem at all Aaron.  The Flex 3401 is a random oribital polisher and is what I use for the vast majority of my details.

What I did today on my S2000 was a two step polish.  The first step involved using a white pad (has medium cutting ability) with Menzerna Power Finish (again, medium cutting ability).  The Power Finish removed the vast majority of light scratches that my S2000 had.  It leaves some hazing on the paint, which is why I followed it up with the Menzerna 0106FF.  The 0106FF has light cutting ability and provides exceptional depth and gloss to your paint.  This one is typically my "go to" polish for a lot of jobs.  After I was done the second pass with the 0106FF, the paint on my S2000 was blemish free and was extremely glossy and wet looking.  I worked about 6 hours or so on it today and am approximately 70% done.  Back at it again tomorrow.   8)

Why would you?  Cars are meant to be driven!  I was nearly as obsessive with the paint on my Supra.  Ask GiantDwarf about the time I MADE him take the Supra down a dirt road and drive it rally style!   :rofl2:
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

That took six hours and you are only 70% done. Yikes.  :o

Menzerna - is that sold in Canada or do you have to special order from the States?  I still have some Zaino left to get me through this year, but maybe that stuff is worth trying.

Yep, Menzerna is sold in Canada.  You can purchase it eshine.ca.  Having said that, if you don't have a machine to apply and break down the Menzerna polishes, I wouldn't bother purchasing them.  They are made for machine use only.  Their sealants are fantastic though.

Also, with the exception of Z-PC, Zaino makes sealants not polishes.

Yes...many of the better polishes require a polisher to break them down properly.

What about PoorBoys....how does that work by hand??

If you've got yourself a PC, most definitely pick up some Menzerna polishes!!   ;D

Menzerna offers numerous polishes with various cutting abilities........if you have any questions just let me know.   :)

PB is the same.  I"m not saying you can't apply Menzerna or PB polishes by hand, it's just that the results will be very minimal and extremely time consuming.  Ron, you have a DA polisher don't you?

This has been a very educational thread for me. Going through rust issues on my car, in future I'm going to spend the time and wax/polish twice a year and undercoat regularly. It's worth it if you have a car you like and/or you want to drive it for a long time.
