Humming sound over 90 kmh
« on: April 26, 2011, 02:34:01 pm »
I have a manual Toyota Matrix '03 130K. it started in the winter - this humming noise when I drive over 90 kph.
When I press clutch the humming sound STAYS - so it's not from engine/transmission/clutch.
When I slow down the noise increases with loudest at around 90kph, and then goes away at around 60kph.
What can it be?

Very possibly a wheel bearing.  No immediate danger.  Could last another 70K km.

^Yup

Does it go away/change if you turn one way or the other?

Sure sounds like a wheel bearing. Jack up the car and try pushing/pulling on the rim. If its got play then bearing needs done right away. You could move the tires around to see if the sound changes location - if not you have ruled out any rim/tires issues.
