Ford Roadside Assistance Sucks
« on: April 23, 2011, 03:47:55 pm »
On Thurs night at 9p.m. the night before Good Friday my son was on his way home from College for the long weekend when his new 2010 Mustang broke down.  He was 97km from home, managed to get off the busy 401 and crawl up an off ramp before the engine light finally came on and he could go no more.  Being as the car only had 34000 km on it I told him to call roadside assistance.  They said they would tow him back in the opposite direction of home.  My son called me back and I asked him what about you?  How are you going to get home.  He conferenced me into a call to roadside and they said they would take the car to a locked facility only.  He was on his own from there.  I told roadside I was an hour and a half drive from him and he can't be standing in a parking lot waiting for me with all his belongings it is not safe.  Right now all he can see is farmers fields not a good place either.  Can the driver at  least take him to a donut place to wait for me.  He suggested he could 'try' to ask the driver to drop my son at a donut place and suggested he just sit in the middle of nowhere until I get there.  I admit I got a little testy at this point I said "Mohamad, if this were my daughter I would walk up one side of you and down the other for suggesting that, send the tow truck".  I made it to my son before the tow truck did.  I saw a big CAA on the tow truck, called roadside assistance, cancelled the assistance call and then called CAA.  CAA's was so apoligetic for my car breaking down like they had something to do with it.  Their first question was to make sure I wasn't out there alone.  The tow truck towed the car to the dealership where I bought it, no problems.  On Saturday, my son and I went to the dealership to tell them about the car.  The service dept wasn't open so I talked to a sales man.  I told him his roadside sucked and he said "I really hope that didn't happen".  I couldn't make this stuff up.  Anyway, I asked for a loaner while the car gets fixed.  He said only if you bought the extended warrantee for $2500 at the time of purchase would we rent you a car..... Are you kidding me?  Seems to me extended means after the initial warrantee runs out.... $2500 to warrantee me against you selling me a piece of crap.  How do I know this is true when you didn't even know your road side assistance program is useless.  Is this a new dealership policy?  Bleed everyone for what you can but don't let them know when the car breaks down through no fault of the owner then tell them it was because they didn't spend enough money to warrantee the warrantee against bad workmanship that we will not stand behind.  Seems to me I was not told that when I bought the car.  No one said to me 'in the event that the car breaks down within 160km of your home you will be expected to walk home or carry at least $1000 for a cab at all times unless you want to pay through the nose not only for the car but an extended warrantee that we will sell you and lie to you when you call it in.  Roadside assistance did not ask if there was an extended warrantee on the vehicle.  And I thought this behaviour was only reserved for used car salesmen.
On our way home from the dealership, we stopped and CAA and got my son covered.  I really had no idea roadside assistance was so bad.

It's roadside assistance, not a taxi service.

The assistance you do get is highly variable and based on whoever has the local contract.

When the battery on my Subaru died in a big box parking lot in Regina, my wife called roadside assistance, which is provided by CAA. She waited an hour and eventually got a boost from a passer-by. She never did see the CAA truck.

The CAA guy said that he just got the call with in 20 minutes of his arrival.  CAA had called me back with a message that it would take up to 30 minutes for the truck to arrive.  I think roadside assistance waited over an hour before calling it in.  Sounds like it in your case too.  Calling CAA before I had never had to wait 1 1/2 hours+ for a truck even in a snowstorm.

The Subaru roadside assistance number goes directly to CAA.

When the Rabbit was in the shop in Sydney, NS for a day, I got a loaner Sonata. Had to argue with them a bit, but they gave it to me and billed VW of Canada.

Life's a biatch.  ::)

I gotta a suggestion  :)  Ditch the Mustang, buy him armoured clothing, embed a GPS tracking system in his body, and have him take the bus.

my deepest sympathies, fran.

obviously, you were worried sick for well being of your son on that fateful day.  and how dare they refuse to offer a rental car while the culprit of the event is being serviced.

However, please, please do NOT EVER write future posts in run-on sentences as in your first post. I managed to finish skimming it, but i hate reading that big blocky chunk of text.    one of my coworkers does that, and he's a douchbag and i hate him.

all the best.

OMFG...too funny.... :rofl2:  :rofl2:

I kinda see both sides of this story.  On the one hand, if you're stranded then a loaner car is likely in order.  But if it's late at night, there is nowhere for the towing company (which is more often than not a 3rd part contractor) to physically get a car.  And it's ridiculous to think that Ford would stock every single towing contractor "in case" someone needed a rental car after hours.

And also, yea, it would be nice to be sure the tow truck driver drops you in a nice, safe spot.  Courtesy would be nice.  On the other hand, these guys might have other calls to attend to.  He's a tow truck driver, nothing more.  Not sure what you expect out of the guy.

If the young man is old enough to go to college and has been driving long enough to be allowed on an expressway and drive at night then he is old enough to stand by fields until his parent comes and picks him up.    He/she was only 97 km away and it was April not January.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

what if it was January not April.  My point is that I had no idea roadside was so bad.  I would have signed him up with CAA+ if the sales people hadn't touted roadside as the best thing since sliced bread.  The difference from where he broke down to Peterborough vs. Oshawa is about an additional 10 minute drive.  The dealership where I had bought 3 cars in the last 7 years wouldn't even give me a loaner so my son could get back to college.  They are not inconveniencing my son, they are inconveniencing me.

If all else fails, read the instructions!

Roadside assistance is a minimum cost sales gimmick. Few read the fine print until they're in trouble, some never. Then they discover it delivers far less than suggested. The maximum tow distance is 25 kilometers to a Ford dealer! Not much in the wide open spaces. The correspondent was entitled to lodging and a rental car on Ford's dime if the distance from home exceeded 160 kilometers.

If personal security was a genuine issue police assistance should have been requested.

See the attachment.

It was your son that inconvenienced you, not roadside assistance. Obviously, the poor boy had a phone. Since it was HIS car, he should've called roadside assistance himself and then called a cab to take him home. It's called self-reliance.

I do know why you are so hard on the kid, he could be as young at 17 and never had a car brake down on him. We do not know kids side of the story
