Wild guess here, but they won't be buying the manual transmission? I like the manual, but at the same time I've heard nothing but good things about the automatic.
The ride of the Elantra is great: soaks up the bumps just fine and is happy cruising around at low rpms. In fact, I find myself driving in general in a more conservative, laid back manner, mainly in the interest of increasing fuel economy. C'est la vie

There's a TSB (not a recall) to adjust the throttle input, which should hopefully get rid of the irritating throttle delay.
