7 million Canadian NASCAR fans??
« on: April 22, 2011, 07:27:55 pm »
There's a new Canadian-owned NASCAR team.  The owner claims that there are 7 million Canadian NASCAR fans..or 20%+ of our entire population.   :o

I'm not buying it.  Or maybe a better question...what is his criteria as a "fan".  Any NASCAR fans want to chime in?

How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

I didn't know we had so many Billy Bobs up here.

And what does the S in NASCAR stand for again.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Oh c'mon, you can't be serious. How can anyone who claims to be a fan of racing and a car guy, not be interested in car racing - even if it is NASCAR.

I'll admit I enjoy watching some of the races. Yes I do - tracks like Daytona, Talledega, Atlanta and The Glen and Sonoma, where there is lots of drama and changes and excitement. Last weekend alone was an eight car finish at Talledega with JJ and Junior providing at great last minute rush. Good stuff.

And since we are not currently getting F1 races in prime time or even daytime, what's to watch? Indy Car - get serious. Okay maybe that's a little too harsh to be so critical, but the excitement isn't there like it used to be.

F1 has its heroes and lots going for it, but since it is a rich man's sport and caters to big buck markets, we the lowly are left to see races at 2 am. Sorry, a good night's sleep is much more enjoyable. When they move to Europe and the Americas I'll watch. However with Vettel back on top again and watching Michael foolishly believe he can be, there ain't much change going on.

So what's left to feed the need - looks like NASCAR is a good bet and it's nice to see Junior in the hunt. They have even more heroes and a lot of comic characters to boot. Edwards, The Busch boys, Harvick, Stewart, what's not to like and enjoy. ::)

I won't say I am a "fan" of racing, but I do follow it...when it is exciting to watch. Unfortunately, most forms of racing on four wheels is of the follow the leader type, and that is downright boring. I prefer WRC and the cars aren't even in close proximity to each other.

I find MotoGP far more interesting to watch.

Most of the pickup drivin' rednecks at work are NASCAR fans.  It's the only racing that matters for the non auto-enthusiasts.
It's funny, they'll drive to Daytona to watch NASCAR for big bucks, but they won't drive 15 minutes to Shannonville even with free tickets, cause it's not NASCAR.

I would believe they have 7 million Canadian fans, not that they all necessarily watch all the races though.

I used to watch back when the cars bore some resemblance to the cars in the showrooms, and the drivers were actually allowed to behave like humans and not cookie cutter corporate shills. Haven't paid attention since then.

That's the thing. I love ALMS because it at least have some resemblance to the cars you can buy on the street and it's proper road racing.

NASCAR is just a bunch of ridiculous cars with no relevance that all look the same going in circles.

Which is why I wonder they still use the same name. Whats "Stock" about it?

That and drag racing. Both bred in the US.

That's pretty much my view as well. The organization shot itself in the foot with the "Car of Tomorrow" and allowing something that is allegedly a Camry to run RWD V-8s. They are on the right track at least in the Nationwide series with the advent of the Mustang and Challenger.

What's wrong with that?  The Impala and Fusion that GM and Ford use don't have factory V8s either.  But at least the Camry is the only car in the field made in the USA..if that matters.

I'll admit it I watch it to a degree. And I don't own a pick up truck. It 's not so much the racing it's the drivers feuding behind the scenes that I like.

7 million fans might be too high...yet I'd suggest that there are more NASCAR fans here than fans of any other motorsport series by far.  The cars may not be as sophisticated as a LeMans racer...but they aren't intended to be either.  Not sure what you find ridiculous about a 350 ci motor with a carb on it that delivers ~ 850 hp at over 9,000 rpm.  Not a bad rpm number for push-rods!

I was a big F1 guy...then moved to ChampCar...and now to NASCAR.  I'd prefer bikes too...but I guess I'm just not disciplined enough to figure out when and where they are on TV.  WRC lacks the side-by-side action I like.

That said, yes...the move away from cars that bear resemblance to the stock models they are named after was a mistake they acknowledge, and are fixing.

::) I will put money on Kyle Bush over any driver on the planet on equally prepared cars.

That guy is amazing...put him in a typically wheel-banging car, and he wins with it.  He's contemplated F1, but he's earning way too much coin in NASCAR to make the switch...and he needs to win at least one Cup championship before he goes and tries it.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

Wrong on all cars mentioned, ONLY the Chargers are the closest things, a V8 and RWD in real life.  Everything else is farce.
