Why Mazda sucks so bad.
« on: April 21, 2011, 12:32:22 pm »
<rant>
So we bought a 2008 Mazda5 in Feb of '08.  Less then two weeks later, we had been in the shop 3 times.
First time, the rear hatch struts de-gassed (is that a term) and one of them had to be replaced.
Second time, the passenger side sliding door literally FELL OFF!!!! I opened it and blammo, it came off in my hand.
Third time, we closed the newly installed sliding door and the trim came off.

Two months later.. driving south on the 400 when we took the 401 off-ramp.  All of a sudden, the power steering pump failed (they recalled these later), and we were almost road pizza'd into the CONCRETE BARRIERS

Since then, it's been okay on fuel and it handles well.. .. but then a few weeks ago, a thief breaks into our house, steals the car keys to our '05 Civic and our '08 Mazda5 and actually steals the van but leaves it down the street to come back for the Honda.   Even he knew what a POS this car is.

And now it gets worse, I take the Mazda to the Brampton dealership that we always goto.   They are there simply to do a once over on it.   That took 4 freaking days!!!!! There was nothing wrong with it!!  So here it is, the day before a long weekend and now they are saying that we won't be getting it back to AFTER the weekend even though they can't find anything wrong with it?!?!?!?!  WTF?

So we rented a Dodge Caravan for the weekend.    Hey Mazda, if you're reading this, consider us gone to the dark side.   See you on Tuesday morning to pick up my car so I can drop if off as a trade-in at another dealership.

Jackasses.

So you were left without power steering... at speed a non-issue

How much does a sliding door weigh? I'd think it would have fallen on you if it came off.

guess I'm stronger then I look  :)

The door might be 150lbs, 200lbs?  It was connected enough that when it came off the track, it didn't fall down.  Something just gave and it came off at the top.  We had to use a flatbed to tow it over.

As for the power steering, it came back on when we turned off the engine and then turned it back on.   But that went straight to the dealer.   I was hoping for a class-action lawsuit against them since that could kill people.

Dude you're not gonna die if the power steering fails. You're just gonna steer the car without the pump's help. Like they did in the old days.

I can't seem to find a picture of it so I'll do my best to explain.

I slid the door open and I thought that there was more play then usual in it.  I went to slide it closed and it just wouldn't engage.
At top in the rail area there is a pin or a something like that and it had come out of the track.

And the more I played with trying to get the door back in the track, the looser it became.  It would 'click' in place when you opened it but not when you tried to close it.

It was off just enough that the lock wasn't engaging.   pissed me off to no end.

You say that now but if you're just driving along and not expecting it, it can surprise the hell out of you.  Next time you're going into an offramp, just turn your engine off and let me know how that works out for you.

If I had experienced what you've written, I'd be mighty pissed too... but the subject line should actually be "Why MY Mazda sucks so bad."  As far as I know, your incidents have been isolated ones and there are a lot of happy, repeat customers out there.  My wife and I have had 3 different Mazda models and other family and friends have had Mazdas, all of whom have been overall, quite happy with them and had no real issues.

True.. After the Honda was stolen, we bought a 2003 Protege5 on a whim from a neighbour who said that it would need nothing to cert.   Of course, the dealership insisted that it needed $1000 to cert (headlights and a hole in the exhaust) but we are pleased with our Mazda5 at least 5 days out of 7.   I more or less went off on a rant when the stealership called to say that everything was 'delayed' for no particular reason.

I've calmed down since then :)

Man, the import apologists are out in force today. If this was a domestic car a certain poster would have already put up a couple of dozen messages rejoicing in your woes.

Very unfortuneate indeed -
Did you have the car inspected before buying ?
Its very unfortuneate Mazda doesn't make as reliable cars as Honda or Toyota
They sell theres on zoom zoom .
Don't let a dealer keep your car if its driveable - book a time instead - bad luck on the timing otherwise
Considered a gypsy to lift the curse ?
I'd get rid of it as soon as the door failed . No excuse for that on a 3 yr old car .

I can relate to this, I've had a few similar experiences with my now long-gone rusty-dusty mazda protege myself :)

The power steering belt used to slip when it gets wet in my old mazda and when it slips it's not like you just loose the power part of the steering, it's much more difficult to steer even when it's moving then a non power steering car. I guess it's because of the design, I've driven non-power steering cars before and one you're moving it steering wasn't a problem.

Nevertheless, the Protege drove way better than the Matrix I have now.
