Camaro Still Outselling Mustang
« on: April 19, 2011, 03:52:54 pm »
SOURCE -> Autoblog

So, despite the introduction of 300+HP V6, 400+HP V8 GT and 550HP GT500 models, the Camaro is still selling 23% stronger then the Mustang through March.

Camaro to date in 2011 has sold 19 972 units compared to the Mustangs 15 419 and the Challengers 9742.  We all know the Camaro won the sales race last year, but many (me included) thought the new Mustang engines would give it back the edge.  5500 more units sold is a pretty big margin.  Autoblog doesn't think it can be overcome.  Although small volume, the upcoming ZL1 and Z28 will only add to the Camaro's appeal I would think.

I have always been a Camaro guy and owned one.  But right now I would take the Mustang in a heartbeat over the Camaro.  I wonder why it is selling so well?  Don't say 'Dumb Americans who are brand loyal to the Camaro'.  There are just as many if not more who are loyal to the Mustang.  In fact, in the past when the Camaro was the faster (and arguably better) Pony car, it was routinely outsold by the Mustang.

Build a slower Pony car....it will sell  ???

Also, the Camaro has no Convertible available for sale yet either.  That will add a few thousand a year to their total.

Styling maybe. The Camaro really catches the eye, it's an awesome styling job. Mustang is 'nice' in comparison, while the Challenger is very retro.

I think it is all about looks. Love it or hate it, the Camaro is by far the more dramatic looking. while I prefer the appearance of the Mustang, I always notice a Camaro on the road. What seems forgotten here is that the Camaro is a seriously fast car. For 99% of drivers, the performance between the two is a wash.

Plus, this forum is not representative of the automotive world out there. Nigh onto 50% of the auto market is domestic, while that is no where close to that number of active members who run domestic iron.

Have not check the websites for financing rates, that could be a big factor.

I too am a bit surprised.  The Camaro convert will be a major boost.  Thinking 25% of sales.  Nice that it's assembled in Oshawa.

Surprising numbers to me, as there seems to be a ton of Mustangs around my area, and only a handful of Camaros.  Canadian numbers seem to follow the same trend as the States:

First three months of 2011:

Mustang  445
Camaro   587

I'm not surprised a bit. There was no Camaro/Firebird for 8 years. There are a lot of GM pony car loyalists who are still getting into the financial position to buy a new one as well as conquest sales from other brands. On top of that, it's a pretty damn good car.

That's a VERY good point, and not one I thought of.

I really love the look of the Camaro from the outside as I find it very aggressive looking and just downright mean from the front end.  Unfortunately, my love of the Camaro ends when I sit inside of it.  I will probably be blasted for this, but I find it doesn't have any better interior than a Pontiac Sunfire from 10 years ago.  But hey, they are selling well so what do I know?   ;D

Ford screw themselves with that ridiculous 7% interest rate. Anyone know what it is on a camaro?

Camaro finance rate is 5.29%, lease is 6.5%, both for 48 months.

I think the pent-up demand point is one reason, but I think the car resonates with the Boomers.  There's a few SS models around here and they're driven by guys about 55.

Excellent point, this may be simply years of pent up demand.   While I really like the new 5.0 Mustang, I would have purchased any Mustang over the last 10+ years, and many did.

Agree, I think its really in the exterior styling. The mass market for these cars is about how awesome you will look driving it with the windows down, not the interior plastics or 30hp extra here and there.

Ideally what you want I guess is a car that looks like the Camaro SS on the outside, with a Mustang GT motor, and the interior from the new 370Z. ;D
(I purposely left out discussion about suspension to avoid the whole live-axle debate)

But yeah I'd buy that hypothetical car in a heartbeat.

Really don't buy the pent-up demand thing. Rrockets been saying that since day one.

i think it's just the fact that it is a sharp and unique looking vehicle, that performs really well, for a reasonable price. Really not much more complicated than that.

Yea, but the Mustang is also sharp looking, priced much better and performs better and in certain regards of higher quality.  So based on your theory, it should be selling better.....So perhaps it is more complicated than that....

They are both selling well. Just that the Camaro sells better. :)
