2012 Mazda CX-5
« on: April 18, 2011, 11:57:04 am »
It's confirmed.... Mazda will introduce a new compact SUV - CX-5, based on the concept shown this year in Geneva.

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/18/mazda-cx-5-small-crossover-announced/

I think it's a very nice looking little SUV; it's a growing segment and perhaps the next big thing as the gas price will go nowhere but up in the near future. This will join the Tiguan, Mitsu RVR, Sportage (and the Q3 on the luxury side) on the small side of the SUV spectrum and I bet it will have no more than a 2.0L I4 DI engine with both FWD and AWD.

If it looks like that concept, will be pretty interesting.

Hope they will have a version with the 2.3 turbo.

i am guessing this and the next mazda 6 will be the first mazdas with the sky-g and sky-d engines.  there will be a 2L 158hp for the mazda 3 this fall.  (a 2.5L sky-g is in the works)   Also there will be a 2.2L 180hp 310 lb/ft clean diesel coming soon after the sky-g.   maybe the cx5 will be using these two engines.

I've heard Mazda is planning to bring over diesels. Most likely the new Sky diesel engines are the subjects if that's true.
They've also said will stick with DI, no turbos, for the new gen Sky engines.
Of course, things could change going forward. These are just rumours and media reports (we know how accurate they are sometimes  ;D).

The design is very encouraging, but I'll wait and see the final product.

it's quite well documented that they will be bringing their diesels to NA.  I read that the first aplication will be a mid sized sedan.  i would guess that would be the new mazda 6 next year?  the cx5 would also get the 2.2L diesel which wold make this vehicle a very intriguing alternative for a lot of people.

Is this confirmed for North America?  I mean diesel CX-5.
I read about the mid-size sedan, but until we see it here, oh well....

A CX-5 with the 2.3L DI Turbo should be able to compete with the RAV-4 V6.

they mention in this article that a "mid size sedan" will get the 2.2L diesel as well as the cx5.  http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2010/08/mazdas-remarkable-sky-d-diesel-engine.html
maybe an announcement at the ny auto show?   http://www.leftlanenews.com/mazda-planning-diesel-related-announcement-for-new-york-show.html

Mazda CX-5 revealed ahead of Frankfurt Auto Show. It looks very promising IMO. I'm glad Mazda is back with nice designs. I can't wait to have a glimpse at the new Mazda3 although the redesign is far away.

Press Realease and Pictures

Mazda Motor Corporation will hold the world premiere of the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show (September 13-25, 2011). The Mazda CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda products that will adopt the full range of Mazda's breakthrough SKYACTIV Technology and new design theme, 'KODO - Soul of Motion'.

The Mazda CX-5 evolves Mazda's hallmark fun-to-drive character and will be progressively introduced to global markets from early 2012. Developed around the full range of SKYACTIV Technology — including all-new Mazda gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, body and chassis — the Mazda CX-5 delivers precise response and a high-quality ride matched with outstanding environmental and safety performance.

The engine line-up for the European specification CX-5 will include Mazda's SKYACTIV-G 2.0 gasoline engine and SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine available in Standard Power and High Power versions. Each engine has a record-breaking compression ratio of 14:1 for ideal efficiency. Mazda focused on achieving exceptional environmental performance for a compact SUV and targeted CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km for the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 engine model.

The Mazda CX-5 is also the first production model to showcase Mazda's new design theme, 'KODO - Soul of Motion', which was previewed with the Mazda Shinari and Mazda Minagi concept cars. Unique themes of KODO design include a prominent new front view with a bolder family face and dynamic styling that conveys a strong sense of vitality and agility.

2.0L High Power version standard for North America and hopefully the 2.2L Diesel (?)
It's a sub-compact CUV and it will probably be light enough. Think Mitsu RVR.

I think I'm going to like the Kodo design language better than the Nagare on the new Mazdas coming our way. Really like the looks of the CX-5. It's appears to be a good size.

Bring the diesel over here and I think I've found the replacement for my P5 when the time comes.

Looks great! I certainly hope it won't have the same rust issues as most small Mazda's of recent years, though...  :(

Mazda has great talent and imagination, but doesn't have the most solid track record for new powertrain reliability IMO. I would be very apprehensive about buying one of the new SKYACTIV diesel engines because of it. That said, do think they stand behind their product and it'll be quite a unique and compelling package.

As for styling, I think a more smiley front end (the grille is still pretty grin-ish) would be more distinctive and attractive than this somewhat generic front end. Handsome enough, but not inspired or different. Think it'll be a strong force in the Canadian market though, and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Some interesting information I saw in an article today: http://www.autoguide.com/manufacturer/mazda/mazda-skyactiv-prototype-review-video-1587.html

The CX-5 will probably be ushering in more than just a new model and a new design language. Probably going to be the first vehicle that totally encompasses their new Sky Active brand of technologies. I think the Mazda3 may get the engines first but this car will be with the new Mazda platform, powertrain, design language and so forth.

Apparently the CX-5 and the next gen Mazda6 will use the same platform as well. More interestingly was that I read Mazda is pulling out of their North American plant they operate alongside Ford. As a result, the next gen Mazda6 will be the world model instead of the custom North American one. I think that is a GOOD idea... the Mazda6 always seemed better to me as a unique midsize car rather than a Camry look alike and the world Mazda6 was always so much sexier.

Thanks. Great read.

Despite all these improvements it still sounds like a tractor, something that certainly isn’t going to help popularize an engine technology that already has a negative view by the buying public. To be fair, this was a prototype and no sound deadening efforts were made, but we’ll be surprised if when fitted in a production car the new SkyActiv-D sounds any less like a truck than a Jetta TDI.

And how many city dwellers know/ remember what a tractor sounds like?  ;D
If that 2.2L ends up making 340 ft*lb and even better FE numbers, I for one, won't care about the sound. [just make it a wagon]  ;)
