Meguirs NXT vs Zaino z5
« on: April 17, 2011, 05:20:50 pm »
I have both meguirs NXT 2.0 and Zaino Z5. Can I use both of them together? Seems some overlap of function with them.

Both of these products are not labeled correctly, and it's confusing to the customer and really annoys me.  Megs labels their NXT 2.0 as a wax, when in fact it's a sealant.  Zaino labels their Z5 as a polish, when in fact it's a sealant.   ::)

Having gotten that tidbit out of the way, they are both very similar products and they are both very good.  Both are synthetic polymer sealants that contain "fillers" that attempt to fill in light scratches and swirls.   If you are interested in using one of these products to hide paint imperfections, you will be very disappointed.  Any scratches that it might fill in are back in a very short period of time.  The best way to have paint imperfections removed is to actually remove them.....not attempt to fill them in.  If you are interested in using these two products simply as an LSP you will be very pleased.  Both have their pros and cons.  The NXT 2.0 looks fantastic and really provides some really good depth and gloss to your paint (especially darker colours).  For a synthetic sealant, I didn't find the NXT 2.0 to be as durable as others.  The Z5 is one of the most durable sealants on the market and I really love the stuff.  The Z5 provides somewhat of a plastic type look to your paint....if that even makes sense.  It doesn't look bad by any means, but the NXT 2.0 provides more of a nice glossy wet look.  I layer all of my sealants with Carnuba anyways so Zaino's finish doesn't bother me.  And don't get me wrong, the Z5 still looks great on it's own.

Erik, to answer your question yes you can use them both.  You can layer sealants so you can apply the NXT 2.0 over the Z5 or vice versa.  If you prefer the look of one and the durability of the other is really the only reason why you would do so though.

Thanks!
Excellent info as always!!!

So I am wondering which is easier to use? I ended up with a bottle of each. All things being equal, I will likely keep the easier one to use. If both are easy, I will keep the Zaino, since I am cheap and could return the Meguirs to CTC. :)

Erik, contrary to what some people say, Zaino sealants are very easy to apply and remove.  The NXT might be a touch easier to remove but certainly not by much.  If you were to keep only one product and you can return the NXT, I would go ahead and do so and keep the Z5.

Hands down the easiest sealant I've ever used is Menzerna Full Molecular Jacket!  Menzerna doesn't make it any more and replaced it with Power Lock, and it's just as good.

Any recommendations on what to cover it with if I wanted to add some carnauba on top?

Thanks again for all the help. Your knowledge is amazing, and your willingness to share is to be admired.

The colour is what Chrysler calls Inferno Red. This is pretty close:

^ Beautiful colour!

Since I'm more than a little familiar with red vehicles  ;D , I would recommend the following on a budget:

Dodo Juice Orange Crush - Simply the best carnuba I've used for softer colours like our reds.

Natty's Red.  It's a limited production carnuba from Poorboys World so it's usually tough to get.  Cheap and looks amazing.

Natty's Blue - Formulated for any dark colour paint, it looks fantastic, is easy to use, and is very low priced for the budget minded people.

Erik, I managed to find a pic of my G with Zaino Z5 freshly applied.  You can be the judge of whether you like the appearance of it or not.

Btw Erik, I can mail you a small sample of Dodo Juice Orange crush if you want to try it out and see how you like it.  It's close to 3 times the price of Natty's blue, but at least you can try it out for one application and see if you like it.

That would be awesome. Thank you so much!!!!

I was just to come on here to ask where to get it on this side of the border. That would certainly make things much easier. Very much appreciate you doing that. PM Coming!!

I use the NXT.  If I am applying and removing by hand, what sponge/cloth type thing is the best to use?

No problem Erik, it's my pleasure.  eshine.ca used to be a Dodo Juice distributor but I don't believe they are any more.  The only Canadian distributor left is RS Car Care in Ontario.

Bob, I would use something like this to apply your NXT.

http://www.eshine.ca/4_round_applicator_black_foam_sealantcarnauba-400.php

You can remove the NXT with a good quality MF towel.  If you don't have a foam applicator to apply the NXT, just use a good quality MF towel.  The advantage of using the foam applicator is it applies a thinner coat of sealant than an MF towel.  Thicker coats result in wasted product and being more difficult to remove.

Foam applicators are WELL worth the small cost for getting a thin, even coat of wax / sealant applied.  Makes removal a lot easier, too.

I had used NXT on my Altima over a couple of years and was very impressed with ease of application and end result.  I also found it quite durable, but then I don't have a broad range of comparative experience.

That is one of those statements that, no matter what side you land on, you lose.  :)
