A little larger tires for the Fit?
« on: April 15, 2011, 07:30:13 pm »
It's time to replace the terrible Dunlops on my 09 Fit LX.  It has a goofy size 175.65.15 which I think is used by only one other car (Mini Cooper).  There simply are not many choices in this size.  If I went to 185.65.15 there are many more choices, it puts the speedo off by about 2.1%.  A 195.60.15 is closer in diameter but I'm concerned about a possible decrease in mileage due to the width. I now run 185.65.15 snows and the Litres/100 kms has increased to 5.7/100 from about 5/100.  It's a manual Fit so a little decrease in the RPM's highway speed would be a good thing.

My question is what would the best way to go, and would the 2.1 % increase in size cause any problems?  Thanks for the help.

PS Any tire suggestions? I'm leaning towards the Michelin Harmony.

Thanks for the reply, 185.65.15 puts me under the diameter of the OEM tires.  If anything I think the Fit would benefit from a little more rubber not less.

You said the OE tires are: "It has a goofy size 175.65.15",
if so then 185/65R15 is the larger diameter tire.

I think your gas mileage might decrease a tiny bit , body roll might increase but you would have more grip , might be a little less nimble too if you go for the 85's  -- but these are only guesses .
Honda picked that tire size for a reason - 75's
But I see your problem , better tire selection . I would check Honda Fit forums and see what performance upgrades work best for your car when you alter tire size , in your case width , they will also recommend the best tires too .

The diameter doesn't change , just the width if you go with 85's .

Personally, I'd go with the 195/60/15's...tons of selection, and the modest width increase would help fill out the fender wells nicely.   As for reduced mileage, that's a likely tradeoff.   Sometimes  you gotta pay to play.  Good luck with your choice, let us know what you decide, and don't forget to post pics.

I just hope you aren't insured with TD Meloche Monnex. They will actually cancel your policy, or refuse to cover you in the event of an accident, if you change the size of your tires to anything other than the stock size!

Interesting. I wonder what they consider stock size? The size that came on the car or all the sizes that are available for that model line? IE: The Golf has 3 different sizes, 16, 17 and 18 inchers.

If he keeps the same 65% aspect ratio and goes with a 185, then yes, the diameter does change.

They don't allow any change from what came on the car. Stupid, huh?

Plus no intakes, exhausts, suspension changes, etc.
