Buying a bike from Ottawa
« on: April 15, 2011, 03:03:22 pm »
Found a bike I am interested in. Problem is it's in Ottawa, and it's a private seller.

How do you work around this? Cheque? I won't be able to pick it up until April 29-30th so I need to make some sort of deposit. Any ideas?

I was thinking of sending the guy a cheque dated April 30th for the deposit, and the rest to pay him when I go there.

Thanks.

I wonder what use it would be to him to have a deposit for the 30th?  If the purpose of the deposit is to hold the bike then shouldn't he have that upfront?

Regardless, if he goes for your plan that is probably the safest route for you.

Good point. But what do I get from him to know that he's not gonna take my money and sell the bike to someone else?

So, what did you buy?

It's a ZZR600. Motorcycles in Toronto are sold by crackheads, this one in Ottawa was almost $2000 less than a similar bike in TO.

Sorry Wing, I arrived in Ottawa at 7, had a look at the bike and headed back to Toronto.

Also worth noting, found a nice pizza place in Kingston, at Ontario/Clarence.

On a sidenote, I sold the Ninja yesterday for $100 less than what I got it for. Not bad for another 8000kms of use.

Ahhh, Woodenheads, I was there a couple of weeks ago.  Not quite your typical pizza joint, good hiring practices.
One of my favourite pubs/micro-brewery is right around the corner on Clarence,  the Kingston Brewing Company, also good for lunch.

Have fun with the new bike.

Didn't know about that. Next time I'm in Kingston will definitely check it out.

Thanks!

Well I brought her home on Saturday. A bit too much riding I'd say, as I'm sore from neck to bum. :)

Coming from a 250 this feels heavy. I'm still getting used to it, and given the weather didn't get the chance to hit some twisties.

Some quick pics, more later.

Very nice!  What year/mileage?

I know what you mean about the sore neck part.  I did a couple of weekend trips on my Ninja 500, my neck was killing me.  I'm sure you could find some taller aftermarket clip-ons that could get you sitting a little more upright.

Enjoy it!

Thanks!!

It's an 06 with close to 6000kms on it now :)

The bars were lowered by the previous owner, I will probably set them back to original spec.

Congratulations. Looks like it's in great shape. 8)

I imagine it feels quite different than the 250.

Congratulations! The bike looks great!

I'm not 100% sure but by your pics it looks like the previous owner raised the forks in the triple clamps. This lowers the front end of the bike and quickens the steering. The side effect is that the bike is not as stable and may be more susceptible to wobbles. You may want to check it up.

Yea, he indicated that he knew that in post #12.  FWIW, lowering the triples any more than 1" is kinda crazy.

Found this picture of a stock ZZR600 on the web. The triples were actually lowered on VDK bike, maybe by more than 1". Definitively need to be checked. Putting everything back to stock will help your neck; and may save it too!  ;)

Cool, thanks for the feedback guys!

Guy you said lowering the front will quicken the steering, would that mean the bike will lean into corners faster?

In a way yes, it will need less pressure on the bars to initiate the lean. It can get twitchy however. On a smooth track that may be fun but on real roads full of potholes, cracks, bumps, it can induce a nasty, hard to control wobble.

I would for sure put it back to factory specs until you are familiar and comfortable with the bike. I doubt a bike like the ZZR needs mod to it's front end geometry for street use.

That's exactly what it feels like to me. Good to know, thanks!
