Any preference in clay bars?
« on: April 03, 2011, 08:47:42 am »
I've used Mothers clay bar in the past. Never heard of any big differences with them, but I just figured I would ask.

Gonna break out the Autoglym today. Was gonna do a clay bar, their Super Resin Polish, and then a layer of their High Definition wax.

There really isn't that much difference between one clay bar and next.  I mild clay bar from one brand will perform similar to a clay bar from another brand.  I personally use Clay Magic and Riccardo, but your Mothers clay bar will work just fine.  Be sure to use a good lubricant and if you drop a piece of clay make sure you don't re-use it.

Thanks!
Will trust the expert! When I used to sell this stuff, I was pretty knowledgeable about it. Been too many years tho.
Ever tried Autoglym? Always wanted to use it because that is what Aston Martin used in the days that they used to do everything by hand and the finish was incredible. Could use Zaino of course. Any thoughts?

I personally haven't used Autoglym, but have heard some good things about it.  From what I've read, it's a little hard to apply/remove than other carnuba's, but leaves a very glossy and in depth shine.  Obviously since it's a carnuba, durability won't be it's strong suit and you will need to re-apply it every 4-6 weeks or so.  I've used Zaino sealants extensively over the years and they are fantastic.  Their Z2/Z5 sealants are extremely durable.  One thing you could do can do is apply Zaino for the durability, let it cure for 24 hours, and then apply your Autoglym over top to get your added depth and shine.  Best of both worlds.   :)

Good plan.

What my thought was for this time:

Clay Bar
AutoGlym Super Resin Polish
AutoGlym High Definition Wax

SO you recommend adding the Zaino between the Super Resin Polish and the High Definition Wax? Or doesn't the Super Resin Polish do the same as the Zaino?

Yep, apply the Zaino in between your polish and Autoglym.  Zaino won't replace your polish since it's a sealant so you will still need to do both steps.  If at all possible, let the Zaino cure for 24 hours before applying the Autoglym.  Btw, what Zaino products do you have?

Can't wait to see some pics!   :)

I will have whatever Zaino I will find at the Barbers Chair today! :)

Thanks for the advice. I do need to find someone locally who knows what they are doing to get rid of the factory orange peel. But that will probably have to wait a bit. Just getting a nice polish and wax on it will be great!!

^ No problem at all, let me know if you have any other questions.  I am not sure if you are in the GTA or not, but if you are I can definitely recommend an amazing detailer to remove your orange peel.  He is without a doubt one of the best in the country.

Oh, and my understanding is that Z5 would be the best choice on my dark red car. Is that right?

Good stuff, I wasn't sure if you were in the GTA or not.  His name is Kevin Hamill and his website is http://gtaindetail.com/.  Like I mentioned, Kevin is without question of the best detailers in Canada......or North America for that matter.  You can see some of his work here.  http://gtaindetail.com/pics/

Eiither the Z2 or the Z5 will work fine with red.  The main difference between the Z2 and the Z5 is that the Z5 has "fillers" in it that will fill in light swirls and scratches.

Good stuff.  He's an extremely busy guy so hopefully you'll hear back from him shortly.  If not, let me know and I'll give him a call.

Just looking at the website, it sounds like he is. But the pics on his website look awesome.

How good can you get the paint on something like my 300C? Does Chrysler, or other manufacturers, give us enough meat to work with to get it really smooth? Overall, the paint is not bad from a production car perspective. But it is a far cry from what it could be.

We bench-tested a decent amount of the products offered by AutoGlym in our shop and none of them were any good. Actually, the right word to use is 'junk.' You're better off using something that is tried, true, and of high quality like Meguiars. In our opinion here at my store, the AutoGlym is quite over-priced for what it is and it delivers less than stellar results.

In terms of clay bars, we have started using 3M mild and aggressive clay bars over the past year and have found that they perform well and hold up with repeated use.

Wow. Only negative review I have ever heard of Autoglym. Not like it is a new product, and it is certainly of the tried and true variety in England. I first saw it at Aston Martin back in the Newport Pagnell days.

The orange peel can be completely removed, no question about it.  The average paint thickness from the factory is 5-6 mils.  You'll have enough thickness there to have the orange peel removed and still have lots of clear coat remaining.  To put it into perspective, I can do a full detail of my S2000 twice a year for over 20 years and still not reach the pigmented paint.  Kevin will have the paint on your 300C looking like perfection!   :)
