Headlight Haze?
« on: April 01, 2011, 07:19:16 pm »
So, our TSX's headlights has some serious "hazing" or UV-damage on its headlights (plastic). It looks awful in the sun, and I am sure it affects the HID output. Is there anyway to "fix" this, other than to buy new headlights? Here are a two pictures from my blackberry:

Best solution would be to trade it for a Buick. :rofl2:

Must be a Honda thing.  I have the same on my Civic.   You could try using a headlight restore kit.  If you have polishing compound lying around, you could try that.

This is easily corrected, I do this for customers all the time.  A DA polisher, light polishing pad, and a mildly aggressive polish will do the trick no problem and restore them back to new.  If you don't have the tools yourself, any local detailer will be able to do this for you.

Even glass can be polished.  Cerium powder works very well.   ;)

To some extent I suppose.  But those older 90 era "fog lights" off Porsche and the like with that highly rippled or textured glass forget it.  The details boys at the store said they were done and they have removed paint scratches that I though impossible .  I had to replace.

I had the same problem with my Pontiac and so picked up that 3M kit on sale last fall:

Worked well with my cordless drill. I would have been tempted to see if rubbing compound alone on a cloth would be good enough (as someone has mentioned here), but didn't think of it at the time.

So what exactly causes this?  Is it UV?  My '03 Pilot lenses look like new, mind you its garaged every day.  However, the '05 Civic I had was never garaged, and its lenses looked like new after 5 years.  I have never experienced the hazy lenses but have seen plenty.

I've never experienced hazy-headlight syndrome either, and my cars are always parked outside. After 8 years of ownership, the lenses on my '00 Neon still looked like new except for a couple of minor scratches that I was more or less able to polish out. The lenses on my '08 Versa are still in perfect shape.

I think a coat of wax on the lenses once in a while makes a huge difference.

Great job, looks awesome!!  Using rubbing compound by hand wouldn't of netted the same results as you wouldn't of generated the necessary heat for the compound to work.  The drill worked great!

DA stands for dual action and it's a random orbital polisher.  Porter Cable 7424, Flex 3401, UDM are examples of DA polishers.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I lack the neccessary tools listed here....I found this product at Crappy Tire:

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/AutoHeadlights/HeadlightAccessories/PRD~0392889P/Bluemagic%252BHeadlight%252BLens%252BRestorer.jsp?locale=en#BVRRWidgetID

Any good?

Actually, I do have a drill. I guess the 3M kit will be the best way.  :) Thanks.

Thanks for that explanation - I have a Porter Cable polisher and I'm thinking it's a random orbital so what's with this new term? I get it.

Random orbitals have always been called DA polishers, so it's not a new term.   :)
