quick tip - removing sap
« on: March 29, 2011, 06:45:35 pm »
Hey, just thought I'd post this impossibly simple tip for removing the sap we found on my wife's Santa Fe today. Really, really hot water and a little soap. If you have kitchen gloves wear them so you can get the water hotter (yes, you may look like a tool) and you may have to it a first time to let the water soak and a second to get the crud off, but it works like a charm. I was about to drive to Canadian Tire and buy a bottle of Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover, but no need.

Anyways, hope this helps somebody. PS - it IS sap season so don't park under trees if you can avoid it. Exercise is healthy, park at the end of the lot and walk!

Cheers.

I wonder if that would work for bug splatters, too.

You need a nice wax foundation so the bugs wipe off easily...

Mineral spirits is an effective way of removing tree sap safely from your paint finish.  It acts as a solvent and breaks up the sap.  Also, always follow up with your wax or sealant of choice on the affected area after removal.

Bugs-B-Gone does that very well.

What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

RR, I don't own a British car, other wise it would be in the garage all the time. Ouch!

I don't use Bugs-B-Gone on the car; I use it on the motorcycles that have been places, unlike those poseurs who never make it further than a Tim Hortons.  ;)

Cripes, who needs special cleaners for a car. Car guys ought to try cleaning a motorcycle after having been on tour for six weeks.

Another good product for this is Dominion Sure Seal sticker and lable adhesive remover, or Dominion Sure Seal 'Sure Solv' which is a solvent-based cleaner/degreaser. You have to work at it a little and of course be gentle because any hard scrubbing can potentially leave marks/swirls in the paint.

Some good tips here, thanks for keeping this one going. I think maintaining a high-quality wax base once a year is key to being able to quickly remove things like bugs, tar, sap, etc. It's probably worth the Saturday afternoon and a bottle of wax polish.

Waxes don't last anywhere close to a year (more like 4-6 weeks) so you'll want to apply them a lot more frequently than once a year.  Even the best synthetic polymer sealants do not last a year.
