My First 3M Di-Noc Wrap
« on: March 25, 2011, 08:04:12 pm »
3M Di-Noc is a very impressive vinyl wrap.  Many of the 400+ styles/patterns have texture to them and the colors and sheen are impressive enough to fool you into thinking you are looking at the real thing.  On the adhesive back of the wrap there are approximately 20 microscopic air channels per inch.  This allows an easy, bubble free installation.  In addition, with a heat gun (I used a blow dryer) the wrap is able to follow complex contours.  If you make a mistake, you merely hit it with the heat gun and start over.  I even crunched a piece into a ball into my hand.  Then gave it the heat gun business and it magically unwrapped itself.

Import Queen wants her hood wrapped because her hood has a few rock chips on it.  Instead of a repaint, I thought we'd try a wrap.  But to be safe, I thought I'd test the wrap (and my skills) on her mirrors.  I also did her fuel door.  They turned out great, and it was pretty easy.  Though it would have been better to have an extra set of hands as I did it all on my own.  Trying to hold a heat gun AND wrap at the same time was a bit awkward.

This is the black carbon and not the dry carbon Di-Noc which seems to be more popular.  Sorry about poor picture quality..photographer (me) and camera are both nothing to wrote home about...

That looks like a pretty darned clean installation - so when does the hood get done?

Great material, thanks for the heads up.
IMO the pattern is a bit too coarse. I'd probably try this: (in black) for the mirrors:

It's no more coarse (maybe even less so) than my real carbon lip.  No sure I'd want a leather texture on my mirrors.  :)

Very nice.  How did you measure/cut when doing the install?

Looks Great!! I have zero experience with these type products so I'd be interested to hear how it holds up over time.

Your job turned out great!

I just half-assed measured it so I'd have extra over the edges.  Check YouTube..there are some good vids, including doing the dash on a car.

It's supposed to last 4 years outdoors and 12 years indoors.

I can see the flat surface applications as being ok, but wrapping it around the mirror looks fantastic. Looks difficult so I guess it must stretch to cover mirrors?

Totally!  Those are some complex curves to go around, and you did a great job.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.
