Buying a car in Alberta and bringing it to Ontario
« on: March 24, 2011, 10:20:15 pm »
I am an Ontario resident, and am thinking of buying an used car in Alberta and bring over to Ontario.

I am not a resident in Alberta, so I know by fact that I have to get a plate from Ontario but I am not sure how thing really works. I can perhaps ask this question to the dealer but I want to know any of you has purchased a car and have brought over to a different province.

With HST replacing PST&GST, I wonder how paying tax works as well. Need some help.

You get a temporary Alberta sticker.  When you arrive in Ontario you then need to get a Safety and an E test if you are unlucky enough to live in a smog zone and then register your plates.

You don't pay sales tax in Alberta.  You pay HST in Ontario when registering vehicle.

You use your Ontario insurance policy number.

Thank you for your replies.

For paying taxes, you would still have to pay GST in Alberta when I purchase the vehicle, would it not? If so, do they only charge only the difference (that is 13% minus GST) when I register it in Ontario? or do they charge whole 13%?

Is this a special or rare car?  If not, why are you buying in Alberta?  Our used car prices are ridiculous.

See the attached Ontario government publication.

Prior to July 1, 2010, an 8-percent Ontario sales tax applied to privately purchased used vehicles - no GST. The HST should have squelched the sales tax on private used car sales. Not one to miss an opportunity to gouge hapless taxpayers, McGuinty promptly invented a new 13-percent tax for privately purchased used vehicles.

That is what I was thinking. Ontario is so much cheaper.
