St. John’s, Newfoundland – The Targa Newfoundland road rally has added a new competition for small-displacement fuel-efficient sporty cars.

The Next Generation Challenge will be a competition-within-a-competition that pits cars of up to 1.6-litre displacement against each other in a contest spotlighting the coming generation of appealing, sophisticated and fun-to-drive cars available in North America. It will be part of the tenth annual Targa competition this September.

“We want to provide a distinct competition for these sporty, fun-to-drive cars that are quickly becoming a major factor in the market,” said Targa organizer Robert Giannou. “It will be a platform for manufacturers to demonstrate the performance attributes and sporty personalities of this appealing generation of new models, and an opportunity for their owners to share the spotlight with the great sporting cars that annually come to Targa.”

The challenge will be a two-year trial and open to production cars of 1.6-litre or less, sold in North America since model-year 2009. The entries must comply with the rules of either Modern or Open Divisions and will compete on equal footing with no handicap. Entries will also score in the divisions in which they are eligible to compete. A separate award will be offered and other rules will apply.

“We believe that car manufacturers will see Next Generation Challenge as a terrific opportunity to demonstrate that there are dimensions to these cars in addition to their attractive fuel economy,” Giannou said. “We welcome them to Targa.”

I find this pretty exciting as I am a big fan of the Targa Nfld rally.  Since these cars can run in either the Modern or Open divisions, I hope that this could become a place for OEM's to battle it out.  Some of the eligible cars would include:
  • Mini Cooper S
  • Mini Countryman S AWD
  • Nissan Juke AWD/FWD
  • Chevrolet Cruze Turbo
  • Upcoming Chevrolet Sonic RS
  • Ford 1.6L Ecoboost (when it arrives)
  • Plus dozens of N/A sub-compact and compact models.
= Today's Ride

I'm a big fan of the Targa too, and have watched it the last few years. I would love to participate in the future - in one of the "I'm essentially here for fun" classes.

We wanted to enter the Supra, but the cost for this was just astronomical.  The entry fee alone was north of $5,000....
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

Wonder if they will erroneously classify the RX-8 as a 1.3L....

I remember TSN broadcast the 2009 Targa around this time last year - wonder if they are going to do the 2010?  Can't find anything on TSN's website

Autos.ca should sponsor a driver someone with Rally, Track and solo experience perhaps.  ;)

Well, keep me in mind in case there's anything about employees not being eligible.  :'(
