Modding the Lexus IS-F
« on: March 05, 2011, 04:00:15 pm »
Through much pushing and prodding by Lexus forum members, a few companies have started turning out IS-F parts, and the car is responding very well to them.  I was surprised at how well, to be honest. Typically, the IS-F is putting down 330-340HP and 295-305TQ to the wheels on a dyno jet..so about 20% drivetrain loss through an auto which is about right.

The first mod (which I also have on my IS350) is the K&N Typhoon intake.  I was surprised to see the IS-F putting up numbers that matched K&N's claims.  25HP and 7 TQ to the wheel!!  Not too shabby at all for a short ram intake and 30 minutes time.

Next to be addressed was the exhaust.  There were so few available that a guy from the forum started his own company just to address the lack of quality exhausts. The JoeZ exhaust is VERY nice, all stainless and weighs about 7 lbs less than the stocker.  You can see the quality and the restriction in the OEM vs. JoeZ below.

And the piece de resistance, the Sikky headers!  Again..another part driven by asking (begging?) a manufacturer to make an IS-F specific part.  And Sikky resopnded with their $1300 coated headers.  To top it off, a set of Random Tech high flow cats keeps it all legal.  (PPE makes headers for my IS350 BTW.  ;)  )

Now I expected some decent numbers as I was following this bolt-on thread, but I honestly I didn't think it would respond the way it did.  With intake, headers and exhaust, the usual first mods, the IS-F belted out a VERY impressive 420.8 HP and 352 TQ!  Others have done this mods and got ~416 HP and ~350TQ, well withing spec, and again quite impressive for bolt ons.  This puts the IS-F knocking on the door of 500HP at the flywheel which is mighty impressive considering no ECU flash or anything.  I have to say..I'd LOVE to be driving around in an IS-F equipped with those bolt on parts!!

How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

@rrocket

What would a 350 do with those same mods?

300+ or so.  I have all that except for headers, and I'm 285 or so....

Ron, that's pretty impressive.  The IS-F obviously responds to bolt-ons very well.  I've never driven one, however a really good friend of mine from Cambridge owns an IS-F and he has spoke very highly of it since he's owned it.   :)

Call me niave, but the entire exhuast set up including headers seems to be missing both CATs and any plug holes for O2 sensors.  Wouldn't this set up be throwing codes left and right (and fail emissions)?

The gains are crazy impressive, but a proper street legal set up would net a bit lower I would suspect.

Oh OK.  My RX-8 (with the Borla) sounds meaner than that IS-F.

'Cause you know, if you don't have any torque, you can at least TRY to make it sound like you do.

As I said in the first post, a set of Random Technology cats were used.  I used them on my Supra. Emission legal and high flow.  You can see them just downstream of the headers...or just upstream of the 02 sensor.  The only alteration to the 02 sensors was a J style bung was used for clearance issues.  No codes, smog legal.  Pics below.
