Honda Accord 2008-Battery Problems
« on: March 05, 2011, 10:23:12 am »
I just want to make everyone aware that after not using my 2008 Honda Accord for 3 - 4 days the battery starts to die on you. The dealer has changed the battery a couple of times to no avail! We have called CAA at least 10 -15 times to boost the car and they recommended This solution: buy a $50 charger, plug it in and attach it to the battery if you won't be using the car for a number of days or if you are going on a trip and this keeps the battery charged. After trying this charger we have never had a problem again - just wanted to share this in case someone else was having the same problem and didn't know what to do.

Presumably you have checked stuff like trunk lights, underhood lights and any stuff like those things that an Accord has.  A trunk light that doesn't turn off will do it in 3 or 4 days.

The dealer should have done a power drain test.  A modern car will always drain at a rate of a few milliamps to keep enough of the computers, anti theft stuff and the remote key "listener" alive and that number should be known to the dealer. Much more than that ( whatever it is) merits a proper diagnosis.

I notice something similar on the Z4...if you leave it for a few days it takes noticeably longer to turn over. Haven't actually measured the voltage though.

IIRC Ovr50 noted that his BMW would only last a couple of weeks due to all the various systems each drawing current at a low rate even when turned off.

I left my 330 for a month and it was fine but that was when it was less than 6 months old and I guess teh battery was still in tip top condition and it was in summer.

Did they bother to measure the ignition off current drain, or were you dealing with the usual parts replacers?

What aftermarket devices did you install?

I don't buy having to use a battery maintainer in the off times. My Honda gets parked for 6 weeks at a time and it starts without the use of a battery maintainer. My battery is in its 12th year.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

By the way, the CTEK 3300 charger-maintainer is on sale at Canadian Tire till March 10th for $49.99; regularly priced at $89.99.

This charger has some very good features; far better than most.

I have one of those, cost my $99 a few years ago.  It is the same one you can buy with a Porsche name on it.  Very handy and can bring some batteries back from the dead that a regular charger doesn't do anything for.

But yeah, check the current drain on that Accord.   If you find one, pull fuses until you figure out which circuit it is on to narrow it down, then go from there.

Is there a reason why we're talking about an Accord in the Truck/SUV forum? Is that a commentary on the road noise/ride quality characteristics of the Accord? ;-)
