My used 2006 Land Rover LR3 HSE 1 year update.
« on: March 02, 2011, 04:52:58 pm »
Wow time flies, it has been almost a year since I went out on a limb and purchased a used 2006 Land Rover LR3 4.4 HSE.

In retrospect I got a very good price (I think). I was able to negotiate the low asking price of $25k down to $23k. A shop inspection showed some worn out tie rod ends so I negotiated that off the price $500 of down to $22500. This was a private sale so no GST.

I also got a removeable hitch, cross bars and a extra set of winter tires (99% tread,Pirelli Ice & Snow).

In the past year I put 23k kms (now at 131k kms) and have:

Replaced the tie rods myself (inner/outer): $250
Alignment: $50 (special coupon)
Two oil changes (16L German Castrol and two wix filters) $130
Suspension Compressor replaced (did myself in about 1 hour): $500.

Considering that the tie ords/alignment was expected and reflected in purchase price Iam happy with the only surprise repair being the air compressor. Knock on wood for year two.

My boss has a 2007 and his compressor just went wonky on him too. Chronic problem perhaps?

Yup. Think about it, air compressor slung under vehicle subjected to our weather conditions not to mention salt etc.

If out of warranty tell your boss to look for a new one on Ebay. Installation straightforward.

That's pretty good.  How long do you plan to keep it going?

Until a lower mileage LR4 (powder puff low mile)  pops up in the market for a price that I can't refuse. This current gasoline price run should help things along nicely. Until then the LR3 will sldier on. The interior is well suited for mucky kids..

I'm thread-jacking here.. but more info never hurts..  ;D

My truck is a 06 V6 SE 5-seater... I had it since Nov. 09 and 86k... it's now at 122k.....

Repairs that have been done since I got the truck (all at dealer):

Front lower control arms - $1800
Coolant + Brake flush - $450
Transfer case oil change - $240
Broken ashtray - $0 (courtesy of the dealer)
Tailgate latch - $80

Issues I had:

Clogged sunroof drain (caused water to leak into the front of the car, known as the "waterfall" feature to some owners) - DIY fixed
Alarm goes off randomly (will be a DIY fix, likely the hood sensor)
Battery is starting to get weak (throws out fault codes when starting in cold weather)

Maintenance:

Mobil1 5W-30 with OEM filter every 10k

Just bumping this thread in case anyone's interested in this truck and want to do some research before buying   :D

Good info and surprisingly expensive repairs. If someone is going to own these out of warranty they need a good cheap mechanic or be willing to do some work myself.  Going to the LR dealer is going to cost $$$$ Also parts in Canada is nuts. Thankfully there is this thing called the internet and some really good wholesale suppliers in the USA.

My coolant flush was $60. Transfer change was $25. I replaced the control arms (outer and inner) for about $150. All costs were just parts. Labour was a few cases of beer consumed by the mechanic.

To do this year: plugs ($80 Platinum Iridiums and rear brake pads $80)
