Need advice on used car sales price
« on: March 01, 2011, 09:07:43 pm »
Hello everyone,

First post and I'm already begging for help...

I am looking at selling my 2009 f150 but can't get a reliable guesstimate for what it's worth.  I've looked on various auto selling sites as well as used car dealers but there is a huge range in pricing.   I tried using a few of the blackbook sites but most of them appear to lead back to dealers wanting to low ball you.

Anways...  the truck is a 2009 F150 XLT Supercrew.   32,000 km and fully maintained.  The extras are extended warranty (68,000 km/36 months left), one way car starter, spray in bed liner and rigid tonneau cover.  The paint and interior are in perfect condition other than a nickel sized ding on the chrome grill on the front.  (btw nice to know the expensive chrome package is just some sort of chromed tape over plastic)

If anyone can give an educated guess on the value it would be appreciated.  Even better would be if someone knows of a place to lookup the accurate value of a used vehicle as I will be getting something else once I sell the truck.

Here is the piece of paper that it came with showing the options:

Here in southern Ontario the wholesale is approx. $25k for that mileage.

I can buy a 2010 unit, 17,874 km, the same as yours without the extended warranty, etc., for $27,100 wholesale.

What retail numbers are you seeing in Edmonton?  There is no sales tax on private sales, correct? That should help.

From what I see there are no taxes on private sales so yes that will definitely help.  I am an AMA member and found it gives access to something called Goldbook car values.  I plugged in my numbers and it gave me the info in this link.

It seems high to me based on what I paid.  I paid $34k + GST and it's telling me $27,650..    that only works out to $250 per month I've owned it.  I paid $1100 for the tonneau cover and bed liner.  The warranty and car starter were freebies in the buy so I don't know if I should monetize them or just use them as selling features.

I just wouldn't get to carried away with your evaluation.

You put the right number on it and it will sell.  The market determines the price.

Put it in for $500. more than your "perceived" bottom line so you have room to "deal".  The vast majority of private used buyers have a psychological imperative to receive a cash "discount" of some sort despite the bonus accessories.
