Tony Stewart and Lewis Hamilton - Swapping Rides at The Glen
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:20:30 pm »
I recall the "Trad'n Paint" event where Jeff Gordon and Montoya swapped rides.  That was the 1st time I took NASCAR seriously...Gordon was very, very impressive.

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Barring an unforeseen scheduling hiccup, two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart and 2008 Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton will swap race cars in an exhibition later this year, Stewart-Haas Racing spokesman Mike Arning confirmed Saturday.

The seat swap comes at the hands of Mobil 1, a mutual sponsor for the two drivers, and is expected to take place at Watkins Glen International sometime during the summer.

The cars involved will not be show cars. They will be legitimate race-prepared machines.

Hamilton will man Stewart's road course ready No. 14 Chevrolet Impala, and Stewart will drive Hamilton's 2010-model F1 McLaren. The respective drivers' race teams will travel with them to the event to tune the cars.

Stewart was not available for comment Saturday.

This isn't the first time NASCAR and F1 have hosted an event like this. In 2003, Jeff Gordon traded rides with Juan Pablo Montoya at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, after which both expressed greater appreciation for the other's respective discipline. Gordon made two runs in Montoya's BMW/Williams F1 machine.

"To get the opportunity here today to do this fulfills really every desire and dream that I had," Gordon said at the time.

I thought Montoya was more impressive than Gordon for that swap..if we look at lap times.  I expect Stewart to be more impressive, since he has plenty of open wheeled experience.

Oh...is bump drafting legal again in NASCAR?  I thought it was illegal.  I've seen plenty this season already.  ???

Really?  Wow...I recall that Gordon got fast relatively quickly.  Still a mile off the pace when it comes to other drives...but hey, not bad for 30 minutes.

Bump drafting sure is legal.  They just couldn't stop it from happening.

Oh he was relatively quick.  But the reason I say Montoya was more impressive was he lapped the complex in Jeff's stock car less than a second slower than Gordon in the full on F1 car.  That's all.

What do you mean they CAN'T stop it from happening?  Sure they can...you bump draft, you get the black flag.  End of story.  Or what you most likely meant to say was they don't really want to stop bump drafting.  Because you certainly CAN stop it if you were so inclined.

It would be kinda like enforcing a 100kph speed limit on the 400 series highways.  You could do it...but it would awfully messy.

It would be super easy.

A couple small proximity sensors fitted with accelerometers.  They use similar accelerometers in football helmets to measure acceleration/deceleration for concussions.  They are very small.  You fit a set of "A" sensors in the front bumper and a set of "B" sensors in the back bumpers.  When A & B come together at X force, you get a heads-up in race control.  All one needs do is look at the track and seeing 2 cars freight training, it's obvious that bump drafting is occurring.

It's simple...but I don't think NASCAR actually wants to enforce it.

I remember that Tradin' Paint episode too.  I also seem to remember Jeff Gordon looked like he was having much more fun than Montoya.  And yet, look where JPM ended up...

I'd love to see Hamilton and Stewart trade rides.

....

Very similar to my take on it...and how could you not!  Going from a 3000lb pig of a car that goes like crazy but doesn't stop worth a crap to an F1 car would be wild!  It came out later that it was a veiled attempt from Budweiser to get Jeffy to F1.

I'd like to see JPM win on an oval this year...he's due.  The EGR engines are no longer an issue (except for Daytona).

It looks like this is going to happen on June 14th, right after the Montreal GP.

Hopefully there will be some tv coverage of it.  I think when JPM and Jeff Gordon did it, it was a half hour show on Speed.  Probably end up having to watch some NASCAR to get to see it.

Tony can fit in an F1 car  ??? Kyle Bush would have been the better choice.

Did anyone catch this?  It was pretty good.  It was an hour long show called Seat Swap: Hamilton vs Stewart.  It sure looked like Lewis was having fun in the NASCAR, he couldn't wipe the smile off his face.  He even finished up with some donuts.  It looks like it repeats at 12pm this Saturday on Speed.

Yeah, watched it, pretty decent. Hamilton is a real personality, and it took him no time to get into drifting that stock car on damp pavement and holding it sideways from 8 almost all the way to 9. Very impressive driving, and he put on a real show for the spectators as well. I thought Stewart was being way too conservative and in awe of the whole affair. Its too bad the weather didn't cooperate.
