Competitors of the Ford Escape?
« on: February 20, 2011, 03:08:08 pm »
My parents have been looking at a Ford Escape.  I have no problem with them buying one however I'm trying to encourage them look at everything first. What other vehicles would be in the same class as an Escape? Rav, Forrester, CRV?

Are they considering I4 or V6 Escape, 2 or 4 WD?

Off top of my head Sorento; it now starts at under 20 grand (4 cyl)

I dont think they are set on buying specially a v6 or v4. Same with 2 or 4wd. I think price and quality would matter more then anything

2011 Kia Sportage is definitely worth looking at.

And the Rav4 is made in Ontario.  :)

I would also take a look at the Equinox as well.  The Sorento is a great choice as well as the Santa Fe.

Then I'd say 2WD + a set of winter wheels will save them a few grand, same with the engine, 4cyl is enough unless they are into spirited driving or need to tow stuff on occasion.
What I'd suggest to them if I were you, is to get brochures of different CUVs they might want to consider, pick a base model in each and then circle the features they feel would be great/necessary to have in the new car. Then have them test drive two or maybe three cars with the most circles.

Forester!  A 2011 2.5X Touring, with an automatic is $29,795.00.  It's a very practical size without being too big.  Decent gas mileage, an average tank of gas is between 9 and 10 l/100km's for us in the summer months.  We have just over 41,000km's on our '09 and it's only ever been to the dealership for regular maintenance.

In my research into CUV's the GMC Terrain, Chev Equinox, Hyundai Sante Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander XLS to name a few which are in the same category as the Ford Escape.

I have driven all of the above and I have to say I prefer the Mitsubishi Outlander XLS above them all followed by the GMC Terrain SLT-1. The Hyundai Sante Fe was a distant thrid due to a rough ride compared to the GMC Terrain which was smooth and quiet.

The Mitsubishi Outlander XLS lists at $36k (top model) but can be had for much less but is the most interesting as it has a 230hp V6, mated to a S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control) sure footed drive train which is almost identical to the one used in the Lancer Evolution rally car. The Outlander also has paddle shifters and a host of technical and sporty features not seen on any of the others. Outlander also comes in less dressed versions priced in the $20k's. It is definitely worth a close look. Excellent fuel economy whether the 4cyl or the V6. Outlander sales in 2010 grew by 30% and there is a reason. Good bang for the buck and the best warranty in the business with a 10 year 160,000km powertrain coverage.

The Terrain SLT-1 with leather 2.4i engine that gets 46mpg is worth a close look also. Features luxurious interior, extra quiet and the quality of build is as good as any OR BETTER out there. Price with leather, sunroof etc is $35k +-. They start at around $27k.  Best fuel economy in class even beating the Ford Escape Hybrid by a hair.

The Ford Escape has an outdated design with a smaller interior (rear).

Just so we're comparing apples to apples, these are the fuel economy numbers for QT1's selection, all with 4 cylinder and AWD.

The Escape Hybrid is far and away the most economical overall.

The Koreans are tough to beat in the compact/midsize SUV segment right now, aside from the aforementioned Subaru Forester which rocks their world. 2011 Kia Sportage/Sorento or Hyundai Tucson/Santa Fe are all good vehicles, but the Subie comes with standard AWD and handles/drives better.
