2004 Toyota Highlander
« on: February 18, 2011, 08:56:00 am »
Is an 04 Highlander at $15, 000 a good buy? Or would it be better to get a smaller but newer used crossover/SUV for similar money? I really like the first generation Highlander's looks, and that model ended in 07. But 15K seems a lot to pay for an 04.

This is the listing:

I paid $18k for a 07 sport awd 2 years ago. It was a us import with 30000 miles. Drove it for 2 years & sold it for what i paid for it. Great vehicle but boring to drive. Got consistent 28 mpg hiway.

AutoTrader has a "Value Finder" function that calculates local maximum, minimum and average listing prices by year, make and model. 2004 Toyota Highlanders run from $11,000 to $15,000. See the attached pdf.

Be aware it averages the asking prices. The selling prices should be significantly lower, at least 10-percent less.

I bought my 2001 Forester in 2004, so it was about 3 years old.  The dealer was asking about $19K for it, I paid $15,300 including taxes.  There is usually a LOT of room to move on used prices, depending on the model.  Highlanders are not too difficult to sell, so they might not haggle too much, but I'd offer $10K for that car and probably walk at anything much over $12K.  What do you think you could sell it for, RIGHT NOW?  If you think you could put it on the trader or kijiji yourself and max out at $12K, then that's the max you should pay.
No place I'd rather be...

Is an 04 Highlander at $15, 000 a good buy?

Depends on previous owner and what's been done to it.  Tow package if used is not an asset.

I like this deal better.  Private, original owner and it is probably the wife's unit like they state.  Providing no teenage drivers, it will go 300K plus.  In 5 years from now, with 250K km, this vehicle will be worth 5K and you will have very little repair money into it.

They claim new brakes and tires.  That was probably for the safety.  Love the one owners that install the bug/chip guard on the front.  Those ppl always look after their cars.

3.3 needs a timing belt replacement. Great motor though. Use that to bargain down the price from $11,900.

My uncle has that year (2004) Highlander with AWD and the towing package because he does some light boat towing on a regular basis. He things it's a fantastic car and said the only non-regular maintenance thing to ever go wrong was the light on the tailgate (his story, not mine :)). So based on that recommendation it sounds like it's worth a look as a vehicle... not sure about the actual deal.
