Audi/VW have been toying with the output of this very same engine for years, not feeling any need to tune in order to show the numbers that competitors do. Instead they wait until they put out a more expensive model (first the TT, now this). Its a great engine for its size, but really. No wonder they make so much money!

An example for comparison;

2012 2.0 in Golf R:   256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque

In my (ex) 2006 Audi A4:

APR chip, specs and current price, 241 HP, 291 ft. lbs. torque (93 octane), or 232hp / 273lb-ft (91 octane) Around $ 600-/700- ($ 599.00 US).

It ran smooth, why is this new Golf R engine considered to be anything special?

GTI 2.0T stock: 200hp, 207tq
GTI 2.0T APR: 252hp, 303tq

Golf R 2.0T stock: 265hp, 279tq
Golf R 2.0T APR: 322hp, 321tq.

Stock vs stock, and chipped vs chipped, the R whoops A3, A4, TT, GTI ass.

.. by all accounts, the engine in this thing is a gem.  i'm sure those 500 who end up with it would be happy.  :)

And by all accounts it's not terribly quick.

But it's refined. This and the N54(?) in the 335i are so smooth..

Meh.  Smoothness is overrated.  It's not like your GTI (or my TT) are buzz bombs, are they?

I don't like vibrations coming inside. And other than 5700-6700RPM the engine is fantastic.

Then don't replace the dogbone mount with Poly like I did!!

Though Vmango LOVES the rawness of my TT....

There are two versions. The older one is the EA113 and the newer is the EA888. The latter has various updates (and a timing chain) but the highest stock power application is 211hp vs. the 265hp for the older design (TT-S for example). AFAIK anyways.

Your such a dick dude!  :rofl2:

I consider any bike raw when compared to a car. :)

OH!!!  Sorry, man.  I wasn't trying to punk on your bike.  It's just that I find Kawasaki to be pretty polished in general, and the ZZR especially so.  There's a reason guys sport tour on those...and it's not because they are raw.  But yea..I misunderstood what you meant!!   :rofl2:

But yea...bikes are raw compared to cars.  Agree 100% there.

I think it's great vw is making the effort to bring such a niche car here while Honda kills every car they produce that doesn't sell 100000 copies.

I've now seen two Golf Rs in Waterloo. My neighbor down the street just bought one it seems as it's been in his garage for about a week. Will have to mosey down and check it out.

I will note that it does not look ANY different (for the most part) than a GTI other than the two pipes out back. I find that disappointing.

It looks very tame.

I agree, I was really disappointed with the look when I first saw it.  When the R32 first came out in the UK it stood out a lot from any other model.

My commute takes me past one of the holding yards on Cherry St for Audi/VW and I barely noticed the R parked beside the GTi yesterday. I'm sure if you asked a non-car person what was different the answer would be the wheels.

The front fascia is different (a bit deeper), too, and it has black mirrors vs. body coloured on the GTI.  Not enough of a difference to merit a second look IMHO.  Not enough pizzazz or boy racer.  Resale might be an issue.  I can see it now:  "I have a Golf R for sale."  Tire kicking dude, "Whazzat?"

That's fine. It means I can get it for cheaper. I don't care for boy racer looks either.

They certainly could have made it more visually distinctive than it is, yet still stopped well short of "boy racer" gimmickry.
