2011 Daytona 500
« on: February 13, 2011, 09:58:19 pm »
Well, the Bud shoot-out is now in the books with the elder Bush claiming victory.  A couple of observations:

  • 9800 rpm ain't bad for 'dem low tech carbureted engines.
  • Interesting how 2 cars can now go faster than the previous "pack" of 30 cars.
  • 206 miles an hour!  Wow...that new pavement is smooth and fast.
  • The new front-ends do look way better than the splitters used last year.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

It's so smooth now that they only lose about 150rpm around the track in the Arca series.  Full throttle the whole way.

Yeah, the 2 car thing is going to play very strange next Sunday I think.  This thursday should give us a better look into how it can be used to a persons advantage during the qualifiers.

Interesting how NASCAR responded to the speeds. They didn't mandate a smaller plate, instead they mandated smaller grill openings and pressure release valves on the cooling system. Supposedly to make them overheat in a draft! Yeah that WILL work, lets get some coolant mist on everyone's windscreen and eventually on the track, so when the motors blow up, nobody can see where they are going!

Lets see, 9,800 RPM, 500 miles, coolant missing, initially from pressure release. I bet the drivers were told not to say anything about these rule changes....

NASCAR issued a press release on the changes, and the VP of competition is on SiriusXM talking about them openly.  I wouldn't be surprised if they went to a smaller plate after more running on Wednesday or even Thursday.

VP Robin Pemberton explained this morning that one of the reasons they went with cooling changes was to extend the life of the engines.  They were seeing spreads of 100 degrees between the pusher (:P) and the pushee...that puts a lot of strain on the engines...and they don't want lots of blow-ups.

Thanks for that info. That is pretty scary, the engine builders can't be getting any sleep.

I dunno, when a coolant system loses water, things usually get worse. The drivers aren't going to give up pushing until its absolutely necessary, ie; too late in some cases. And if a pushing driver keeps moving out to pick up some air, or pushes consistently from off to one side on the car in front (its probably safer not to move left and right while on someone's bumper), then aren't there going to be more spinouts of the lead car like the Mark Martin incident on Saturday.

Thursday should be "interesting". Too bad the guaranteed entry for the race covers a majority of the drivers. Those who have to race their way in will be torn between drafting, overheating and not finishing or losing power, or not.

Once Chevy and Dodge submit thier Muscle cars (and you know they will) what is Toyota going to do?  I know it is all stickers, but a Camry against the Camaro/Mustang/Challenger seems weird.  Maybe they will swtich to Scion to un the newly named FR-S?

It's just a body.  They're all (almost) the same underneath.

Oh I know, only the nose sections vary (very minor at that) but from a marketing perspective it seems weird keeping the Camry against the pony trio.  Oh well, time will tell.

Or it could be a marketing homerun!!  "Our family sedan beats the competition's muscle cars!"

No worries!  That's certainly not a unique argument against it however.  You take ANYTHING that someone is interested in and take it down to it's base level and it's boring.  For example - Hockey...hitting a piece of rubber with a stick

Moving on - We've seen NASCAR move to a smaller restrictor plate as we thought.  The changes to the cooling system seems to have caused quite a bit of shifting around in the Duel race today.

I didn't mean to dis anyone who likes NASCAR.  I happen to like F1, I'm sure there's lots of people out there that don't.

I was just being a smarta$$....   ;D

The two car draft thing was a bit boring honestly last night.  But it seems to be much safer for the drivers.  Once 43 cars are out there, it may get more entertaining.

Good on Waltrip coming 3rd in his qualifier in that old #15
