Fuel Economy When Driving in a Gear Not Meant for that speed
« on: February 12, 2011, 03:14:54 pm »
Lets say I'm driving 50 KM in 5th gear. Probably not an appropriate gear for that speed.  Will I still get better fuel economy at that speed then I would if I was in say 4th?

Tough to say.  Depends on gearing.  If the car isn't bucking or lugging at 50km/h it might be fine.

It would depend on the vehicle, it's gearing and the road conditions. If you are lugging the engine then no, the fuel economy would be worse. Look at the torque@RPM figure for that particular engine, peak torque RPM is where that particular engine is most efficient under load.
