It's funny, I want to like the new Fords. They're great on paper and Ford is building a really good rep for reliability but there is just something about them that makes me say "meh". I went to test drive a MKX last Fall and when I got in I took one look at the interior/dash etc and told the salesman "forget it , I won't waste your time or mine" ....never even got as far as starting the engine. I haven't looked at the new Explorers yet but i suspect the outcome might be the same.

I guess I'm kind of out of touch when it comes to interiors. I like wood trim, soft touch textured surfaces and tan/beige leather...... not a lot of silver plastic or brushed chrome looking trim. I also want a car that gives me some colour choices other than black, grey or silver.

FWIW, the difference between the interior of 2010 Edge and the 2011 Edge is absolutely night and day when it comes to interior materials.  I can only assume that the same is true for the MKX, but can't say from personal experience.

Thanks, I may drop in to Downey's next week and have a look. May I ask why you decided on an Edge LTD rather than a MKX? The pricing looks surprisingly close.

Volvo seems to have got their act together in the reliability dept. CR gave the early years of the XC90 lots of the dreaded black circles for reliability but for the last few years they've rated them as "much above average"

I've had a number of them and they are very reliable, at least in the first 4 years.

If you happen to go shopping south of the border, take a look at www.cars.com.  I used that website for car shopping when I purchased my S2000 from the States.  I just plugged in the bangor zip code and chose the radius that I was willing to travel to purchase my S2000.  Good luck with everything.

Why don't you pick up a X5 from the states?  Built in the US so you don't have to pay duties and the dollar is at par.  My friend bought his from bavarian motorworks in michigan.  They did all the paperwork.

I was under the impression BMW Canada was one of the companies that hosed you big time on a number of "required" mods before they would certify the vehicle as meeting CDN standards.

Thanks...I've been doing that with autotrader.com but I'll have a look at that site. (I've been using a Portland zip and a 100 mile radius to get down around Boston)

I started with Bangor and used a 500 mile radius........but I ended up purchasing my S2000 in Chicago!   A fun drive back home though.   ;D

As I mentioned earlier the price point on the X5 is a little past where I want to be and the closest dealer is 160 kms from here (another negative).  Also, while I liked the X5 I test drove, the whole I Drive thing has me a little spooked. I'm still finding some of the controls on the Mini Cooper frustrating and annoying and it's far less "Hi-Tech". I guess I'm a bit of a Luddite as I really prefer knobs and switches to scrolling through menus. (That may also be a strike against Ford/Lincoln with this Sync thing  :-\ )

Yeah, you definitely wouldn't like the new MyFordTouch system as there is only one single traditional knob.

>:(  That's too bad. After your earlier post I went to the Ford site and the new interiors look OK to me. How complicated is this system if all you want to do is adjust the HVAC system or change the station on the radio?

Actually I listen to CBC about half the time. The other 50% is probably divided equally between a couple of top 40 stations and one that plays golden oldies. Occasionally I listen to one of the six CD's I loaded when I bought the car 3 years ago. ;D (that's actually an exaggeration...a couple of them have been changed since then)

The idea that I would ever organize myself enough obtain and load a bunch of music in digital form and then organize that into some form of usable playlists is faintly absurd  ;)

Personally, I don't find the MFT system complicated whatsoever.  I use voice commands for pretty much everything, but using the touch screen is very easy IMO.  If you are interested I could show it to you sometime.  IMHO, Ford has definitely stepped up their interiors and their materials used are much better quality these days.  Here's the interior of mine.

Thanks, I may take you up on that if I get serious about a Ford. I think I will go into Downey's this week and have a look. I actually find that interior quite nice. Do they come in beige or tan?

Mazda CX-9 or Honda Pilot.

Sorry Careener, I missed this suggestion.

I test drove a CX-9 in 07 before I bought the SRX. I found it a little too big and soft ...almost what i would think of a "van-like"

The Pilot? well, kind of bland and our local dealer has a pretty poor reputation

Sure thing, you can take mine for a drive anytime.  No tan leather interior, just charcoal, stone, and Sienna (which is a brown leather).
