Starting to look again....
« on: January 22, 2011, 03:59:05 pm »
Starting to think about a new car again. Right now I'm kind of thinking about a late model (2010) CPO MDX, XC90 or maybe a XC70 (although it may be too "soccer mom" for me) I like the BMW X5 a lot but it's just too much more than I'm prepared to spend. 50-ish+tax is probably the upper end pricewise although if I go CPO I'd rather be in the 40's.

If I was to decide on the Volvo I might look at going stateside.

I test drove a MDX awhile ago and while it was really nice it didn't leave me with that "oh wow, I've got to have one" feeling.
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

XC90 would be a great choice.  Any thoughts or consideration on a CPO FX35?

Not much room for cargo in a FX35... Would you consider the new Grand Cherokee? I rented one the other day and was VERY impressed.

I guess it depends how much cargo space you need.  Certainly enough for every day use, even without the seats flipped down...

There is no question the XC90 offers more cargo capacity over the FX (92 vs 63 cu sqft).  It all depends on how much you need.  I'd gladly take either SUV.  The FX sure has one sexy exhaust note though, just like the G Coupe.

FX35 is probably too small. I test drove one in Portland in 07 when I was shopping last. Very "sporty" and lots of fun to drive but a little tight for cargo room.

I've been into Dobsons twice to try and look at the new Grand Cherokee. Both times I parked at the showroom door, walked all around the GC,sat in the driver's seat, sat in the back, opened the hatch etc etc Neither time did anyone even acknowledge my presence with so much as a "hello" or "can I help with any questions?" Finally after five or ten minutes I left. That, combined with my deep suspicions about Chrysler reliability, probably have taken Jeep off the list.

How about the Nissan Pathfinder?  I've owned a number of Nissan/Infiniti vehicles and they all have been nothing short of bullet proof.  A Honda Pilot would be a good choice as well if you don't mind their styling.

Had a 03 Pathfinder for just over 5 years....great vehicle and pretty much bullet proof . Unfortunately the 05 redesign makes me want to  :hurl: or at least  :banghead:

Understood.  I much prefer the older Pathfinder styling myself as well.  I had a QX4 and it was bulletproof just like your Pathfinder was.

^ New Explorer, great addition.  I would definitely check one of them out.  When I had my Edge in for it's first oil change, I was given a new Flex for the day.  I must say, I was quite impressed with it in terms of road quality and room inside.

It's funny, I want to like the new Fords. They're great on paper and Ford is building a really good rep for reliability but there is just something about them that makes me say "meh". I went to test drive a MKX last Fall and when I got in I took one look at the interior/dash etc and told the salesman "forget it , I won't waste your time or mine" ....never even got as far as starting the engine. I haven't looked at the new Explorers yet but i suspect the outcome might be the same.

I guess I'm kind of out of touch when it comes to interiors. I like wood trim, soft touch textured surfaces and tan/beige leather...... not a lot of silver plastic or brushed chrome looking trim. I also want a car that gives me some colour choices other than black, grey or silver.

Strange....I've been poking around the Volvo site for both Canada and the US. Unless I'm missing something the V8 XC90 is no longer available in Canada but is still offered in the US. The new turbo six is offered here in the XC70 but not the Type 'R" XC90... The 90 seems to have to make due with the base 240hp in all three trim levels in Canada

wonder why?  ???

My parents had an XC90 in England and the transmission and brakes failed. It was only a couple of years old I think. It was an automatic but I'm not sure if it's the same transmission used here as theirs has the diesel engine. They recently bought a new XC90 (!) primarily because it was the only option that met their towing needs.

Volvo seems to have got their act together in the reliability dept. CR gave the early years of the XC90 lots of the dreaded black circles for reliability but for the last few years they've rated them as "much above average"
