Still not convinced that Winter Tires are worth the money?
« on: January 21, 2011, 07:33:16 am »
Driving to the subway at 5:15 am today, I was turning left to go south on Warden Ave. from St. Clair, an '02 Honda Accord was in front of me making the turn as well, he made the turn and he started fishtailing, went straight and then the car pulled to the right and went straight into a large iced over snowbank. I stopped since there were no cars anywhere to see if he was okay. He was, but his car wasn't...

Headlights destroyed, front bumper cracked in several places and falling off, grill wrecked and hood was bent in the middle. Easily a few thousand in damage.

He told me he was going to drive it back home, not going through insurance since nobody was involved. I don't blame him.

He asked me "how the hell did you not lose control?". I asked him if he had 4 winter tires on his car. He said no. I told him that was your problem and that's why you lost control. He left and I continued to the TTC parking lot.

Damn right winter tires are worth the money. The Toyo G-02+ kept me in control on that icy patch.

Nothing to do with that particular brand of tire, just the fact that winter tires keep you in better control, and yes, you need to keep a light foot when conditions warrant it.

And the extra traction afforded by winter tires in -30 degree Ottawa this morning was very handy!

Who trash talked the Toyo G02+s?? There really is no need... the tires trash themselves.  ;D

Good for you though... I think it's 75% driving skills as the tires are just barely adequate for winter IMO.

You may have noticed that traction at -30 is better than when it is in the -5 range?

Hard to say (no pun intended).  The sidewalls are definitely stiffer in this arctic cold and there seems to be a lot of stiction at these temps (http://www.wordnik.com/words/stiction). Is that what you mean, or are you pulling my leg?

No I mean there is more traction on snow covered roads at lower temps. I think when it is that cold there is no layer of water created thus making for more traction. Ever notice how skis don't have the same glide in extremely cold temps? Same deal although special waxes can help to overcome it.

Makes sense.  When I rallied, I used to aim for the snow covered inside shoulders of the road to get a good launch around the corners.  If I hit it right I could slingshot myself into a good 4-wheel drift.  If I got it wrong (as happened once or twice) there were always ever-helpful spectators to help get me back on the road.  With FWD and left foot braking you can really get around a corner fast.  Takes lots of practice though.

And about stiction.  I believe when it gets really really cold (like -30 !) the hoarfrost on the road that often forms, provides better traction.
