Squeaky Noise When Steering
« on: January 06, 2011, 04:32:44 pm »
Pontiac G5 - 2006 – 60k on the experience dial.

I have a noise when I turn the steering wheel. It sounds like it's inside the car. The closest way I can describe it is when you are cleaning a window and you hear that squeaking sound. It sounds a bit like that.

The car doesn't seem to have any problems steering and in general drives well.

If it's really cold I have a similar noise from the steering column in my Audi.  Plastic bits rubbing together.

That very well may be what is is. When I first heard it it didn't sound like anything serious.

Make sure your power steering fluid is topped up.
Had a similar noise once and topping it up solved the problem.

GM's are noted for having problems with the intermediate steering shaft in quite a few models. Sometimes they are replaced, sometimes lubed somehow.

Won't apply to this model, it has electric assist P/S. The noise your hearing could just be the P/S motor engaging, they do make some funny noises and it's located by work knees.
