Sign's Your Brakes Need Servicing?
« on: December 20, 2010, 08:16:46 pm »
What are some signs that your brakes need servicing? I know going by kilometers is hard but I have around 58,0000 KM after 4 years.  My brake area and rims are always extremely dirty. Lately I have heard from squealing noises from my brakes.

As well what are some trustworthy chain shops where I could get brake work done. I.E. Midas, Speedy?

I suspect you need pads.  Generally, that squeak is a wear indicator.  It's made to squeak to let you know you need to change your pads shortly.

I suspect you could probably do your own brakes if you were sufficiently motivated.  If not, I have found a some out of work mechanics advertising on Kijiji.  They will even come to your house to do the work.  If you were close to me, I'd be happy to do them for you...
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

Have a feeling we are within reasonable driving distance. I'm in Guelph.

What kind of car?

Here's a local guy to you.  $50 labour to replace both front pads/rotors.  Not unreasonable at all.

I'd imagine no more than an hour or so to do both sides.  You have a garage?

Nope, no garage.  Maybe a spring could be arranged for one day?

Yea..I can do it.  Just kinda hard to do outside in the snow.  ;D

I'd seriously consider calling that Kijiji ad.  Unless you can't afford the ~$50 labour.  Otherwise if you're strapped for cash, I'll do my best to help you out.

I'll probably look into it in the new year.  Does 60,000 KM sound like a normal time for non Toronto driven car to need its first brake check? In past vehicles I've went as high as 80,000.

It's not unrealistic.  Different cars, different brake compounds, etc.  So many different variables.  I don't think 60,000kms is horrible.

Once the snow goes down, I could do your brakes in my garage.  But I have both Lexus in there now with plenty of snow in the driveway...

Nope. I ran 97,000 kms of mostly city driving and I still had plenty of pad material left.

It also depends on the design of the brakes. If you have crap brakes, the calipers stick long before you need to replace a set of pads. If your discs are corroded, the pads will wear much faster as well.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

What i ended up doing is stopping by a shop that was recommended to me in Kingston. Seemed like an honest guy. Said they did make a bit of noise overall they had lots of pad left and recommeded waiting before doing any work in them. More then likely it was the dirt on them causing the sound. Because they did have a lot of dust on them. He charged me 40. Bucks which i was happy to pay.
